📺 90 Day What? Keeping Up With Who?
Reality TV, Fictional History, Ask Me, and Tell ME what you want...what you really really want
Hey Poddy People!
Two weeks until Podcast Movement! Let’s get to it.
Incubator Update: As part of the USC Incubator sessions, we got feedback on the pitch and the pitch deck. There’s work being done on that front.
Website Analytics Update: We saw a discrepancy in website data in regards to visitors. Fixed it and saw a jump in numbers after the fix!
Industry News: Axios reported that Substack, whom we are using for this newsletter and for occasional podcasting, will be deepening their podcast abilities with original content and tools. Read more here.
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: Spectacle
Genre: TV & Film | Society
Publisher: Neon Hum Media
Keeping Up With The Kardashians. The Bachelor(ette). Queer Eye.
Host, Mariah Smith, explores the hype, the ups and downs, and pitfalls of reality TV. I listened to the Bachelor and 90 Day Fiance episode because I kinda watch those shows and I know the premise. Don’t judge me. I liked both episodes. I’m listening to The Great British Bake Off (I have never watched it) right now and it’s quite the opposite take than those other two.
There were quite of few Critic reviews, especially on “Best of halfway through 2021 lists”. Make sure you check them all out in the link!
Emma Carey - Esquire - Jul 14, 2021
“A must-listen for reality TV fans and haters alike, Smith unveils the intersections of politics, culture, and reality TV in an episode-by-episode format that’s as bingeable as Love Island.”
Podcast: Edith!
Genre: Fictional History (Explicit Language)
Publisher: QCode & Crooked Media
What an interesting fictional podcast concept. President Woodrow Wilson suffers a stroke. His wife, by his side, tells her story in a fictional podcast that possibly leads to her being the unofficial first female President.
The audio voice acting so far is pretty spot on. Seasoned acting and QCode’s expertise in fiction podcasts are certified Great. Maybe we should make “Certified Great” a thing. Hmmm.
PR Staff - Podcast Review - Jul 7, 2021
“Quirky, stylish, and probably historically inaccurate, Edith! stands out as one of the best celebrity-led podcasts to date.”
Podcast: Ask Me Another
Genre: Comedy Games
Publisher NPR & WNYC
Announced in June, NPR has decided to cancel the funny game show. I started listening pre-pandemic and it was quite the fun complimentary piece to Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me. Obviously, pandemic-wise, it was a little tough to get that audience interaction, but they persisted. Go back to the archives and listen to their episodes. Also, sign the change.org petition to keep them on the air!
Roderick “Odd” Modlin - Odd Blog - Jan 25, 2019
“The feel is optimistic, the questions are fun...it’s a lot of fun and a great way to fill up a commute.”
Honorable Mention:
Podcast: Billboard’s Pop Shop
Genre: Pop Culture
Publisher: Billboard
Episode: Wannabe’s 25th Anniversary
In my personal pick to feature. It’s the Spice Girls’ 25th Anniversary of their hit Wannabe this month. Mel C, Sporty Spice, joined Pop Shop to chat about her new single, Wannabe, and a potential group tour in the future. Internally screaming with potential joy.
