Hey Poddy People,
I’m visiting the Bay Area for another week. Let me know if you are here and let’s hang out!
Ok, after being peer pressured by people on the last newsletter about not watching Laguna Beach, I finally did. The first episode was cringe-city. Totes would’ve been fine if I watched it 20 years ago, but now…yikes. Like totally. OMG. I side with Kristin and Stephen’s yucky feelings on looking back on Back to the Beach. Woof.
Legends that passed away
Nichelle Nichols (Lt. Uhura - Star Trek) passed away. A groundbreaking black actress in the 60s and character that was NOT a maid as Whoopi Goldberg pointed out, on a major TV show at that time. StarTalk Radio re-released Neil deGrasse Tyson’s interview with her from 2011 on YouTube or here. You’ll need to search for the archived episode on podcast apps as they did not bump it up on the feed.
Vin Scully, legendary announcer from the Dodgers passed away as well. The Dan Patrick Show reposted his interview from 2014 on the feed.
Let’s all take inspiration from Vin’s famous line, “In a year that has been so improbable, the impossible has happened.” Make something impossible happen!

On to my picks this week…
Podcast: My Mother Made Me
Genre: History
Publisher: Radiotopia
There’s a calming PBS meets Radiolab quality about this new Radiotopia presents series.
About: Writer Jason Reynolds and his mother, Isabell, explore their shared history, how she raised him, and what they’re teaching each other.
Jason creates a soothing setup of conversations with his mother. A personal reflection, a mother’s history, and a societal reflection of who they are. In episode 2, “Lots of Flowers” Jason takes his mother Isabell to a birthday lunch. Should we celebrate half of birthdays or days of gratitude? Isabell wants to enjoy her flowers now. A take on appreciating your loved ones now, wherever, however you can, because they won’t be able to smell those flowers or appreciation when they are gone. Then I came across this blog post from She Wins Society that reiterated this feeling.
Fiona Sturges • Financial Times
“Reynolds is a contemplative host and his writing chops are evident in the narration, which paints evocative pictures of his life, past and present.”
A Tribeca Festival’s 2022 Audio Storytelling Official selection of the 4-part series released the final episode yesterday.
Podcast: The Followers
Genre: True Crime
Publisher: LBC, Global
Stalkers suck. Often times stalkers can lead to way more serious crimes. LBC (London Broadcasting Company) Shelagh Fogarty shares her first-hand account of her own stalker. It’s a vivid retelling with narration that includes the stalker going to the LBC office, through the train, and eventually to Fogarty’s home. I’m three episodes in and I’m frustrated for her. I’m chilled to the bone for her. I feel helpless for her.
Miranda Sawyer • The Guardian
“It lasted for almost two years, and her telling of it is riveting, especially at the start, when she’s confused as to whether the stalking is actually happening. Fogarty’s story, which mercifully ends pretty well, is interspersed with her interviews with experts...”
Side note: Global decided to drop this podcast on the Hunting Ghislane feed instead of creating a separate feed. Meh, not a fan of this method.
Podcast: Celebrity Book Club with Chelsea Devantez
Genre: Books
Publisher: Chelsea Devantez
For Book Lover’s Day on August 9th, I’m dropping in Celebrity Book Club Chelsea Devantez (The Problem With Jon Stewart).
Simply put, Chelsea and a guest dissect a celebrity memoir. The good and the bad.
I listened to the episode on Rob Lowe & Melissa Gilbert’s separate memoirs episode. This episode featured comedian Paul Scheer as a guest. There is no shortage of commentary since Paul is a podcaster himself.
Oh boy, they did not hold back on Rob’s book and his retelling of stories that didn’t match Melissa’s retelling. Rob and Mellisa were a thing in the 80s.
Now, the second episode I listened to was about Golden Girl, Rue McClanahan’s memoir with guest Sofiya Alexandra (Private Parts Unknown). Long story short, they were entertained by this book. The struggles, her big break, and her break-ups. I just may purchase this book.
PodcAsteroid
“She(Chelsea) is entertaining and personable. Listen to it.”
Side note: The Golden Girls Pop-Up restaurant opened up in Beverly Hills for the next 2-3 months. Let’s go!
