Hey Poddy People,
I’m in pitch deck/funding mode for the next month or so. I’m finding great feedback from peers with new excitement. It’s been something that has been a thorn in my side for a while. Let’s get to it.
Updates:
Podcast To TV: The hit podcast, Betrayal, is now being adapted into a TV show. I am not surprised! Read more here.
Analytics: We hit our highest Daily Active User count on Tuesday (excluding Reddit day in April). Clearly, we are doing something right in podcast discovery and decision-making.
It also helps that our Google SEO is trending higher
A couple of new podcasts launch this week. Be sure to check out the Coming Soon section on the homepage.
Crooked Media (Pod Save America, Pod Save The World) and Adobe struck a partnership with Adobe’s Speech-To-Text tech. Read about it here.
NBA Highlight: Draymond Green going after the haters and his poor performance from Game 3 last night in the latest episode. Quite an interesting listen from a player with an active podcast. Is Draymond the drama?
We have a guest contributor this week for Pride month. Tal Minear! I met them at Podcast Evolutions and they are a delight. More about Tal and their picks are below with a few fiction dramas to get attached to!
On to our picks for the week…
Podcast: Father Wants Us Dead
Genre: True Crime
Publisher: NJ.com
Storytime: I hit a point where I had so many podcasts to listen to but didn’t know where to start. I literally used Great Pods, read the professional reviews, listened to the trailer, and hit play on my run. It actually worked.
BTW, I’m not only the Co-Founder of Great Pods, but I’m also a client. (Joke reference below)
Back to the podcast. Father Wants Us Dead is a super tragic story and released on the 50th anniversary of the murder too. It makes me upset to hear that John List killed his entire family and then dipped out without getting caught. I didn’t read supplemental material or articles about the updates regarding the murder because I am hoping the podcast showcases it for me.
Becky B. Dominguez • Victoria Crime Stoppers
“...has the true-crime thrill and investigative weight you’ve come to expect from journalists with over 25 years of combined experience.”
Guest Contributor Tal Minear (they/them): Tal Minear is a nonbinary voice actor, sound designer, and fiction podcast producer. They're the creator of Sidequesting, What Will Be Here?, Someone Dies In This Elevator, and several other productions that can be found hiding under rugs and around corners. They spotlight podcasts by trans and nonbinary creators at Podplane, a monthly newsletter. You’ll see their reviews sprinkled throughout the Great Pods site!
Tal’s picks
Podcast: Caravan
Genre: Fiction, Adult, Drama
Publisher: The Whisperforge
CARAVAN is a wild-west romp down a canyon and into hell. It's unabashedly queer and sexy and I love the show for it. The writing and sound design of CARAVAN is simply stellar, drawing you in and getting you invested in the characters. The depth of characterization (there's a canyon pun here somewhere) brings this show to life with incredible heart and passion. I adore that the queer rep in this show is imperfect - characters are allowed to be messy, but they're also allowed redemption. It's the type of show that we need so much more of, and I'm eagerly awaiting the next season.
Podcake • Discover Pods
“CARAVAN plays with genre, the hero’s journey, and eroticism in one big, unabashed, thrilling bundle.”
Podcast: Seen and not Heard
Genre: Fiction
Publisher: Caroline Mincks
Seen and Not Heard is a slice-of-life audio drama about hearing loss and deaf gain. From the moment I learned about it, I knew this was a story that simply needed to be told - and now that it's out, I can tell you this is a story that you simply need to listen to. One of the things I love about Seen and Not Heard is how queerness is ever-present but not front and center. This is primarily a story about disability, but it's also about the intersectionality of identity. Seen and Not Heard invites you to connect to its characters in a way that will have you learning about yourself. It's beautiful and important.
Phoebe Lett • New York Times
“With creative sound design, sharp writing by the director Caroline Mincks and convincing performances…”
💡 PodLight Spotlight Recommendation:
Tal’s Pods! Both these shows have queer representation and a largely LGBTQ+ cast and crew!
Podcast: What Will Be Here?
Genre: Fiction
Publisher: Tal Minear
About: …five friends send a rocket to space with a collection of recordings on it that document the world’s decline, the stories they want to tell, and their efforts in building this rocket to get their message to the stars.
Robin • Sky Full of Pods
“There are some heartwarming thoughts on creating and the impact we and our work can have on others and the world, which gave me a lot to think about.”
Podcast: Sidequesting
Genre: Fiction
Publisher: Tal Minear
About: It follows Rion, an adventurer who’s willing to help just about anyone out - as long as they’re not being asked to deal with the scary wizard everyone keeps talking about.
Michael Bergonzi • Audio Drama Reviews
“The fact Tal Minear can write from experience in a fantasy world is great for people who want to understand the mindset of someone in a minority. It’s the first step, but a necessary one in today’s divisive climate.”
