Hey Poddy People,
Hope your week is filled with excitement! Quite a bit to get to. This week revolves around TV shows and their podcast name drops. If you have been a part of the newsletter for a couple of month’s you’ll recognize the two I’ve mentioned, Only Murders and Ted Lasso.
Live Shows Update: Last night was Conan Needs A Friend live at the Wiltern. I did not attend. As of publishing this newsletter, one Facebook post mentioned it was really fun. The surprise guest was Will Arnett.
Planning on seeing SmartLess live in February.
While finishing up this edition of the newsletter, USC Annenberg just had a Zoom conversation with Cole Cuchna & Titi Shodiya (Dope Labs) from Spotify’s Dissect podcast. It’s being recorded, so I’ll send the link out in a future newsletter. Shoutout to Joy on this email list, USC Alum, and content creator for her question on where one should put their energy in content or marketing. The current season of Dissect is on Mac Miller’s Faces.
Industry News: Apple released their first original podcast that is not part of their Apple TV+ supplemental podcast lineup. MacRumors.com reports here.
Website News: We hit our highest unique page views for October 2021! Not going to lie, but it's scary exciting to try to top it this month, but that’s the goal.
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: Bardstown
Genre: True Crime
Publisher: VAULT Studios
On the Only Murders In The Building behind the scenes podcast, a couple of the writers revealed their podcast listens. One writer, Kirker Butler, mentioned Bardstown, which he and his wife listened to. Kirker’s wife is from Bardstown.
About: A string of unsolved murders wreak havoc on the small town of Bardstown.
I had listened to four episodes last year, but I forgot to continue because of the amount podcasts we have to listen to each week. I restarted this time and just by the look of the episode list, there have been some new developments with the FBI!
Zach Johnston - Uproxx
“…the show really shines is in revealing Bardstown’s seedy underbelly, while maintaining compassion for its residents.”
Honorable mention: Rob Turbovsky, another writer on the show and USC grad (*cough cough), listens to My Favorite Murder.
This is a Lasso-filled list. My inspiration for this section was when I was watching Season Two of Ted Lasso. They dropped two well-known therapy podcasters in Episode Six, Esther Perel, and superfan of Ted Lasso, Brené Brown.
That made me think where can we get more listens with the cast, especially with themselves or Brené!
Unlocking Us w/ Brené Brown
Genre: Relationships
Publisher: Parcast, Spotify Exclusive
Jason Sudekis and Brendan Hunt
Did not know that Coach Beard spent 5 years in Amsterdam!
Brett Goldstein at ACL Live 2021
Sarah Niles (Dr. Sharon)
Crossover - Esther Perel on Brené
This was after they both found out they were name-dropped on the show. Esther really blows Brené’s mind in this pod episode.
Alice Florence Orr - PodcastReview.org
“Unlocking Us does a great job of developing her theories on vulnerability and courage, and has arrived as a timely comfort during our current crisis.”
Films To Be Buried In w/ Brett Goldstein
Genre: TV & Film
Publisher: Brett Goldstein
I’ve already recommended his podcast before, but here are the episodes.
Nick Mohammad (Nate the Wonder Kid)
Matthew Gilbert - Boston Globe
“It works beautifully, often going deeper than you might expect…”
Honorable mention (no critic review):
IndieWire’s Millions of Screens
Genre: TV & Film
Publisher: IndieWire
Juno Temple & Hannah Waddingham
I wanted to find an episode with Juno on there. They chat about their new real-life friendship thanks to the show and feminism on the Ted Lasso. Skip to the 21-minute marker for the conversation.
Let’s not forget Esther Perel’s podcast:
Podcast: Where Should We Begin?
Genre: Society, Relationships
Publisher: Esther Perel Global Media, Gimlet
Esther has real counsel sessions with real couples and it’s a thing of beauty.
Annie Foskett - Elite Daily
“Whether you are single or in a relationship, you'll relate to, learn from, and cry with these couples.”
Podcast: Homespun Haints
Genre: Spooky
Publisher: Becky Kilimnik (Indie)
The recommendation came via Alexandra from POD.RALAND. Even though it’s after Halloween, I managed to lose sleep this week one night.
About: Listen to real stories of hauntings, ghosts, haints, and other paranormal occurrences, told by the very people who experienced them.
Paul - Paranormal Globe
“Homespun Haints is one of those few podcasts that really keeps me enthralled and makes me want to listen to another episode…”
Keep safe and be kind!
XOXO
