Hey Poddy People!
This edition is a tad bit late. Just when I thought I was done, life throws some unexpected turns. Anyway, last week we had a great time at the Golden State Meetup. Reps from Podfest, a podcast conference I haven’t been to yet, were there, as well as my favorite people from Dolby, the audio company. This isn’t an ad, but their latest sound engineering in Dolby Atmos (you’ll the symbol on several streaming apps) for podcasts is pretty dang good, especially fiction podcasts.
Let’s GO!!!!
The Round-Up
WNYC/New York Public Radio laid off more from the podcast division and shut some prominent down. Death, Sex, & Money, and More Perfect to name a couple.
A little more drama for your mama. Last Podcast on the Left’s Ben Kissel has been accused of abuse stemming from the early 2010s. Read the Rolling Stones article here.
We like spooky season and 13 Days of Halloween is back from Aaron Mahnke’s (Lore) Grim & Mild, iHeartPodcast Network, and Blumhouse. Launching October 19th. Trailer here.
At the meetup, I ‘met up’ with Niko, creator of Death By Dying which we featured last year. He’s hard at work with new episodes coming!
Wondery announced their new podcast, Ghost Story, a fiction-thriller, launching October 23rd. The entire series will be out on a subscription level with Apple/Wondery+. If you can wait weekly for each episode, it’ll be available for free. Trailer here.
A couple of months ago Stitcher and LeVar Burton announced a new podcast. The trailer just launched! It’s called, Sound Detectives. Trailer here.
Don’t forget Disney’s Frozen podcast has launched with the first two episodes out for free and released weekly. Just like Ghost Story above, the entire series is out on a subscription level with Apple/Wondery+. If you can wait weekly for each episode, it’ll be available for free.
Also launched this week is XOMG POP! PODCAST for the teens.
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: A Race Around the World: Based on the True Adventures of Nellie Bly and Elizabeth Bisland
Genre: History, Women
Publisher: Adrien Behn
About: On November 14th, 1889, two female writers entered a race to go around the world in under 80 days. Nellie Bly went east, and Elizabeth Bisland headed west. This eleven part series will unpack their whirlwind adventure and what it was like to circumnavigate the globe alone as a woman at a time where women had no rights. A Race Around the World brings the incredible accomplishments of these two bold solo female travelers to life, going through every country and feeling they face while braving the world on their own, in under 80 days.
All I remember was the movie and stories of two men racing around the world in 80 days in a Jules Verne novel, but of course, like a lot of things in historical fiction, some real history can be buried. That is why it is important and fun to learn about these two women partaking in the non-fictional race around the world. Heck, Nellie Bly met Jules Verne on her trek and finished within 72 Days! Take that fiction men.
From Trivia-Library.com
The meeting between Nellie Bly and Jules Verne had been prearranged. She had asked for it. She thought it would be a great stunt to meet the author of the fictional character whose record she was trying to break. She went 180 mi. out of her way to see Verne, and she had less than three hours to talk to him. But she knew it was a good story. And it was.
First episodes we learn about Nellie and Elizabeth’s upbringing to get to this point of working for a publication and the proposal of travel. Adrien Behn clearly narrates with a nice touch of voice actors throughout.
Devin • Podstack
“The story of Nellie Bly is one so impressive it’s hard to believe it actually took place in the 1800s. It’s wild that this actually happened and this is such a great way to learn about it. It has a playful production style, with scripting and structure that make it really fun to listen to.”
Podcast: Flula Makes Five
Genre: Comedy Fiction (Sitcom)
Publisher: Flula

Massages…
I couldn’t have been more amused at listening to this podcast. Flula has been on Conan O’Brien’s late-night show countless times and of course, the Youtube clip that I shared about pooping out of parties a couple of weeks ago. We hear signature Flula in the podcast. A laugh track included it’s a podcast sitcom that is 1990s ridiculous. Do you like the 90s-00s sitcoms? With all the 90s rewatch podcasts, you’ll probably like this one.
Lauren Passell • Podcast The Newsletter
“...I couldn’t be happier. The writing is packed with jokes, and as always, Flula’s slightly-off way of phrasing everything makes even the non-jokes funny. Sitcoms are a dying breed. This is a real treat.”
Podcast: McCartney: A Life in Lyrics
Genre: Music
Publisher: Pushkin, iHeartPodcast Network
About: "McCartney: A Life in Lyrics" offers listeners the opportunity to sit in on conversations between Paul McCartney and poet Paul Muldoon dissecting the people, experiences, and art that inspired McCartney’s songwriting. Over two seasons and 24 episodes of “McCartney: A Life in Lyrics”, you’ll hear a combination master class, memoir, and improvised journey with one of the most beloved figures in popular music. Each episode focuses on one song from McCartney’s iconic catalog – spanning early Beatles through his solo work.
I don’t think it ever gets old to hear Sir Paul talk about how he couldn’t read music. It’s such a delight to the storytelling with official Beatles music intercut with interviews. As McCartney and Muldoon speak, I get the urge to hear parts of the song, and poof, there it is.
Eleanor Rigby: Things I didn’t know. Paul’s dad was Father McKinsey in Eleanor Rigby, but couldn’t put his real name, Father McCartney.
Back In The U.S.S.R: I always enjoyed the parody of this song and riff off of the Beach Boys. Especially Paul’s double meaning of “Georgia on my Mind” lyric in the song. Hearing it from the man himself is special.
Fiona Sturges • Financial Times
“McCartney: A Life in Lyrics is rare among music podcasts in being able to play lengthy excerpts of the music under discussion — such are the perks of interviewing a copyright-owning Beatle. But the most striking element is the enthusiasm with which McCartney looks back at his life and his songs…it’s testament to McCartney’s charm, charisma and his understanding that no detail is too insignificant that I wanted both to last longer.”
