Hey Poddy People!
Applications abound in the startup accelerator world this week. If you are unfamiliar with accelerators, here is a quick read. You get one full recommendation and some partial ones this week! Weβre applying to Y-Combinator, TechStars, Founders Boost, and Troy Labs. We are also interviewing with Long Beach(LA) Accelerator this week! Cross your fingers.
For new subscribers, Great Pods is a startup site and newsletter for podcast discovery and decision-making. We are growing in traffic, thus fundraising and applying to accelerators, but we are also taking you on our startup journey.
Updates:
Fundraising Fiction: Residents of Proserpina Park is fundraising for season 3. You can help out here. βResidents of Proserpina Park is a fun and entertaining way to learn about creatures from across World Mythology. Season one was absolutely amazing...β - Sam McDonald β’ The Audiophile
Podcast Criticism Podcast: Related to GP in criticism, our pod friend, Rebecca Lavoie (Crime Writers On & Critics Panel moderator from Podcast Movement) and her son Henry Lavoie started a podcast being Critical of celebrity podcasts. The first episode is on Meghan Markleβs Archetypes. Listen here. I imagine episodes like 90s show, The Critic, to happen on this podcast.
Coming Soon Section: I shared this little tidbit on Twitter.
Hey #indiepodcasters! You have a NEW podcast coming out? Send me the @PodcastindexOrg link and launch date. I'll add it to our "coming soon" section. P.S. Have a trailer please. hello@greatpods.co #diversify #podernfamilyItβs not just for Indies. Big and small networks alike. Send the podcastindex.org link over. First to the inbox was Hallway To Nowhere which is launching on October 1st. Just in time for the spooky season.
Listen to the trailer here.
Charts: Early votes are in from last weekβs survey on publishing weekly, biweekly, or monthly Great Pods charts in the newsletter. Weekly charts took an early lead, but there werenβt enough votes. I added a survey here at the beginning of the newsletter. Itβs just one tap or click. Pick your fighter.

On to my picks this weekβ¦
Podcast: Business Wars | Season: Zankou Chicken Murders
Genre: Business, Drama
Publisher: Wondery
I love Zankou Chicken here in L.A. so file this under the βWhat the hell?!β section. If you are ever in L.A., letβs go. Itβs a SoCal chain of restaurants started by an Armenian family via Lebanon that set up shop in L.A. I love their Tarna & Shawarma Combo plate.
Back to business. Business Wars is a storytelling podcast that brings out the drama from past rivalries. Nike vs. Adidas or the current season, Taylor Swift vs. Scooter Braun. This particular season was brought up with a friend because I was blabbing about Zankou and he mentioned there was a season on Business Wars. I looked for reviews, found some, and got to listening ASAP.
Sandeep Mallya β’ 99 Signals
βitβs not just the brilliant storytelling ability of David Brown that keeps you hooked to this podcast. Itβs also the fact that there are so many lessons to be learned from each business rivalry.β
Davidβs narration is interesting at first. There arenβt interviews with the family and itβs mostly himself doing the voices of the subjects. I felt more comfortable by the second episode with that style of storytelling and Iβm into it. Oh, by the way, holy crap. My favorite restaurant has some family drama. If a podcast has me wanting to do more research, I am instantly a fan. There will be more Zankou chat in a blog post. Stay tuned!
Podcast: Jaime Winstoneβs Greatest Night Ever
Genre: Entertainment
Publisher: Cako Bako, Acast
I donβt know who Jaime is, but once I read the review snippet below and saw the cover art, I started to listen.
Hannah Verdier β’ The Guardian
"With her cheeky cackle and easy charisma, Jaime Winstone is a glorious podcaster..."
I donβt even know who her first guest is, Danny Dyer, but his initial story about getting into a car with the Artic Monkeys by chance after an awards show. That was funny.
I think this podcast will have more British celebrity guests than American ones. Itβs kind of nice rather than the usual Hollywood affair.
On the queue:
Podcast: Punch Up The Jam
Genre: Music
Publisher: Headgum
About: Every Thursday, Andrew and Evan Gregory (of The Gregory Brothers) are joined by a special guest to revisit, review, and revise a song of their choice, and then offer an improved "punched-up" version.
Andrew and Evan Gregory take over for the original host Demi and Miel. You know The Gregory Brothers from songifying the news and viral clips. Most recently:
And from the history books:
Queue: 'Never Gonna Give You Up' by Rick Astley
'I Want It That Way' by Backstreet Boys (w/ Jack Douglass and Erin Breslin)
'Levitating' by Dua Lipa (w/ Connor Ratliff - Dead Eyes podcast)
Nick Douglas β’ Life Hacker
β...a great way to learn about an old song.β
