Hey Poddy People,
I’m still recovering from the trip to Podcast Movement in Nashville. Unbeknownst to those that stayed the weekend, like me, there was an Indy Car Grand Prix that had an influx of 100k people to Music City. No worries though, a negative Covid test came back. Let’s go!
Podcast Movement Update: With every new connection I made, I was able to learn what some podcasters needed and what value Great Pods could add to the podcasting ecosystem. One major takeaway is creating a resource guide for podcasters to seek out critical reviews which I will have the draft ready by next week. I am looking forward to the follow-ups.
Shoutout to the home-base crew, as mentioned last week with Jay, Jenn, and Cory which was great to have. Oh ya, there were puppies too!
Twitter Update: New pod friend from the movement, Arielle, tweeted about us and we received new follows and subscribers.
She has a weekly podcast newsletter as well, based around a theme called the EarBuds Collective. Check it out if you want to add to your podcast recommendations emails. Thanks, Arielle, and welcome everyone that’s new!
Here’s a refresher on Great Pods.
Great Pods is a website and newsletter that collects podcast critic reviews from around the web to help you find your next or first podcast listen. The Rotten Tomatoes for podcasting.
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: Good Moms Bad Choices
Genre: Parenting & Society (Adult Explicit)
Publisher: Good Moms Bad Choices (Independent)
As mentioned, I met a lot of cool new podcasting friends that included these two, Erica and Milah. I ended up interrupting their meeting to introduce myself. I didn’t know they were in a meeting! Oops. However, it made my introduction a tight 30 seconds and I saw them an additional two more times. It was all good from there.
When I listened to a few episodes, I did blush quite a bit. It’s quite explicit, but I did have a good time laughing.
About: Erica & Milah, 2 uncensored sex + cannabis positive parents challenging the stereotypes of single parenting & life…
Marisa Lascala - Good Housekeeping - Dec 2, 2020
“For raw and unfiltered parenting opinions...this is for parents looking for something a little more R-rated.”
Podcast: Bridgewater
Genre: Supernatural Fiction
Publisher: Grim & Mild | iHeart
Aaron Mahnke, the creator of the ever-so-popular folklore podcast Lore, returns with this new supernatural story. I had the pleasure of attending his session about 3D audio with fiction podcasts and a chat with him afterward. Like Aftershock, the technical sound effects while listening with headphones is great. All the subtle left & right sound effects and knocks on the door, definitely had me looking around.
About: When a relic from his past is rediscovered, folklore professor Jeremy Bradshaw puts his life on hold to solve the mystery.
Keelin - Mentally? A Magpie. - Aug 6, 2021
“The pull of show is exciting, dragging you into a complete picture and not letting go until the eerie warm narration of Mahnke pulls you back to reality.”
Podcast: Tumble Science Podcast for Kids
Genre: Science
Publisher: Tumble Media
I have family driving down from the SF Bay Area this weekend and I am pretty much the cool Uncle.
However, with the kids, we are usually attempting to make tik toks and playing video games. This time I wanted to change it up with a podcast and getting outside to explore. Tumble often has great tips on exploring the outside and more. I’ll report back next week if this experiment worked or not. In the meantime, I need to find some magnets…
About: Exploring stories of science discovery. Tumble is a science podcast created to be enjoyed by the entire family.
Miranda Sawyer - The Guardian - Apr 3, 2021
“The result is a warm and engaging show that doesn’t just broadcast at kids but includes them too.”
Honorable Mention
Aftershock, the audio fiction drama podcast, is back in the newsletter because of critic reviewer Tea In The Sahara. He wrote an amazing shoutout for Great Pods in the review which was super kind. Thank you, Kev. Read it & love it!
Stay safe, wear a mask, and get vaxxed!
XOXO
