Wheeling and Dealing Major Pods
SmartLess signed a 3-year $100 million deal with SiriusXM taking them away from Amazon Music/Wondery. SXM will have rights to sell ads and add potential subscribers. The Howard Stern demographic days are most likely over. Read more here.
Call Her Daddy is no longer Spotify exclusive and is available everywhere. Read more here. Spotify will control the ad pipeline.
Spotify also has a partnership with Cooper’s Unwell Network through which Spotify serves as the sales and distribution partner for shows in the network, including Hot Mess with Alix Earle and Pretty Lonesome with Madeline Argy.
Joe Rogan signs non-exclusivity with Spotify bringing his video distribution of the pod back on YouTube or elsewhere. Wall Street Journal estimates the deal to be around $250 million, but Spotify said no numbers are public. Read about it here. Spotify will control the ads pipeline. Notice a trend here?
It looks like the big guys are figuring out how to become the exclusive podcast ad pipeline. I think they must be learning from the following…
ACAST, a major hosting, publisher, and monetization platform with many major pods on it, is not going to release podcasts on YouTube. To be honest, I don’t blame them. Why?
Acast holds exclusive monetization rights to its podcasts, and re-hosting on YouTube disrupts that structure. The company argues Dynamic Ad Insertion is a key income source for podcast creators and YouTube’s re-hosting of episodes negates the possibility of running DAI ads, impeding creators’ ability to monetize their content on YouTube. - RadioInk.com
Following their bankruptcy filing, Audacy plans to lay off 25% of Pineapple Street Media which has produced some excellent podcasts. My advice to anyone thinking about layoffs:
On a funny note, Actress and occasional Irish, Ayo Edebiri (The Bear), is having a great awards season. She’s hosting Saturday Night Live this weekend with Jennifer Lopez as the musical guest. Well, I got sent a clip of when she was on Scam Goddess in 2020 talking about J.Lo! Clip here. Full Episode Here. H/T Brewster.
ELMO! Poor Elmo went viral on social for asking how people were doing. Brands and indviduals all responded. So much so, Elmo had to go on a morning show tour, like The Today Show.
Little did some folks know that Elmo dropped a new podcast called Ready, Set, Elmo! on Audible and a sleep podcast, Goodnight, World from Headspace/Sesame Workshop.
And finally, Curb Your Enthusiasm fans rejoice as the final season is coming up and the rewatch podcast with Jeff Garlin & Susie Essman launched this week. I was on and off as a viewer, good reason to start again.
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: The Godmother
Genre: History, BIPOC, Society
Publisher: Novel, iHeart
About: the 1930s, Lucky Luciano, one of American history’s most notorious mobsters, was finally taken down by a rookie prosecutor. Eunice Carter was one of the first Black Women ever to become a prosecutor in America. She operated from the heart of the Harlem Renaissance to navigate the corrupt world of downtown Manhattan politics, and a deeply racist and sexist pre-civil rights American society. But her pioneering role in what became known as the “trial of the century” has been forgotten by popular history. Hers is the story of a writer, social worker, mother, teacher, sister, socialite, political candidate, community...
A resounding heck yes for podcasts on forgotten people or just never brought up. I mean, the first black female lawyer? Come on! And she took on Lucky Luciano? Let’s go.
Context is king. We start with Eunice’s upbringing in Atlanta and the 1906 Atlanta race riots (also new to me). Eventually, it led to a migration of Black Americans to northern states at the time. Then we take a walk around her time during the Harlem Renaissance before getting to Lucky’s immigrant upbringing. Engaging, educational, and cool.
Hannah Verdier • The Guardian
“there’s a far more intriguing story in the background: that of lawyer Eunice Carter. Described as “the spark that started the fire”, it’s about time Carter, the first Black woman to act as prosecutor in America, got her props.”
Side note: Today I learned why they shouted EXTRA! EXTRA! for newspapers from this podcast too. Don’t @ me. 🤯
Podcast: Electric Futures
Genre: Society, Science
Publisher: University of Southern California
About: Featured in the LA Times! Electric Futures is a new podcast series from the University of Southern California exploring lesser-known stories of the energy transition, from the perspectives of the people most impacted by the changes that transition will bring. In Season 1, former USC Provost and current professor Charles Zukoski explores the tradeoffs California's Imperial Valley faces as the lithium extraction industry comes to town, weighing economic opportunity, environmental impact, and a worldwide hunger for lithium.
I was excited to listen to this podcast produced this podcast by my alma mater. I’m that much more interested in what’s happening in Imperial Valley, California’s backyard (that is if you can afford a backyard), with lithium mining in the electric battery industry. Just like the podcast picks in this newsletter, context is king. Learn about the Valley, the people, and its economy (agriculture). Then get into the nitty gritty of Lithium. How it’s made and especially in the Valley, how it’s refined into a renewable source. It can get a little technical, but still digestible. I learned there is a brining process that is more than brining chicken.
Stephen O. • Podcast Delivery
“Electric Futures delivers a thorough examination of the societal, economic, and environmental nuances tied to the extraction of lithium. All the while, we’re encouraged to avoid repeating the mistakes we seem to always make and listen to the members of a community on the cusp of substantial change."“
Podcast: The Raven
Genre: Sports, True Crime
Publisher: Audacy, Tenderfoot TV
About: On January 31, 2000, just hours after Super Bowl XXXIV, Baltimore Ravens star linebacker Ray Lewis and a group of friends got into an altercation outside of a club in Atlanta’s affluent Buckhead neighborhood. Within seconds, two men -- Richard Lollar and Jacinth Baker -- were dead in the street. Lewis and two friends, Joseph Sweeting and Reginald Oakley, were charged with murder. Less than a year after the killings, Lewis became a Super Bowl champion. He ended his Hall of Fame career with another title in 2013, and is widely regarded as the greatest middle linebacker in NFL history. Host Tim Livingston ('Whistleblower') investigates the double homicide, one of the most infamous crimes in sports history, and unveils new evidence that paints a vivid picture of what happened that tragic night in Atlanta.
Just in time for the NFL playoffs and the Raven’s losing to the Chiefs for the Super Bowl bid, comes a former Raven’s story. I liked Whistleblower from Tim Livingston and his access to NBA referee Tim Donaghy. So when Livingston goes on this journalistic investigation to fill in the story of the then murders, it delivers. Just hearing clips of Ray Lewis spewing out nonsense again, actually has me listening to Tim and how he approaches this podcast.
Frank Racioppi • Ear Worthy
“Livingston does not rush to judgment. In this initial episode, he begins to ask questions and search for more conclusive answers than the responses that have been given for the last two decades.”
