The Round-Up
Podcast to TV: The popular true crime podcast, Betrayal, has been adapted to TV what looks to be a part interview - part reenactment. Watch the trailer here. Catch up with the podcast with seasons one and two. It’s bonkers.
The pretty awesome Marvel’s Wastelander series has gone international with Audible. Sirius XM has told me, “The conclusion of the six-part Wastelanders series earlier this year marked the completion of SiriusXM’s exclusive content agreement with Marvel.” Those English-language podcasts are still available. Read more here.
Esther Perel’s exclusive deal with Spotify has ended and relaunched with Vox Media on all platforms. Catch Where Should We Begin? here.
Heavyweight has also moved to all platforms and is re-releasing all those exclusive episode goodies. Listen up!
Renewed for a 2nd season from Apple, After The Whistle with Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) and Rebecca Lowe just in time for the Women’s World Cup 2023.
Daisy Ridley is the new host of True Spies podcast with voice acting done by Edward Norton in The Oswald Tapes episodes. Previous seasons were hosted by Mission Impossible co-stars Vanessa Kirby & Hayley Atwell.
The NBA great Kareem Abdul Jabbar wrote on his Substack about movie critics in which I equate with my conversing with podcast critics.
He writes, “I disagree with movie critics that I respect all the time. But I appreciate that they provide criteria for their judgment and give examples as to why something didn’t work. They are thoughtful in their analysis rather than glib, smart rather than smirky.” Read more on Kareem Abdul-Jabbar Substack. I wish I could write like him.
Storytime: I was just watching the new Dungeons & Dragons movie last week and a cute little Bradley Cooper made a cameo. The next morning in my inbox, iHeart sends a press release that Bradley’s production company Lea Pictures signed a partnership with them. Forget about Alexa or Siri listening, who is in my brain? Read more here.
Potential Podcast News: Comedian Sarah Silverman is suing OpenAI’s ChatGPT and Meta’s LLaMA AI tools for copyright. This will be interesting how it will pertain to all fields like audio and AI. Read more here.
Reminder: The Listen Now button on GreatPods.co lets you pick which podcast app you’d like to open unless it’s exclusive to a platform. You don’t have to go searching for it on your podcast app.

On to my picks this week…
Podcast: The Redemption of Jar Jar Binks
Genre: Documentary
Publisher: TED
About: As the man behind one of the most divisive characters in cinematic history steps forward to tell his side of the story, host Dylan Marron goes back to reckon with the online hatred Jar Jar inspired, and what we can learn from it today.
Full disclosure. I am one of those haters when Star Wars: Phantom Menace came out, but I wasn’t an early internet troll adopter. I did blame George Lucas for how that movie wasn’t great and Jar Jar was just one of the many reasons. Just don’t tell my nephew who loved the movie. Oh boy, the extreme negativity it produced back then, I can still see it.
Dylan Marron is contemporary and friendly. He’s the friend I want to explain this story and the deep dive to me. He even makes pop culture comparisons to Shen Yun posters/billboards which, those of us in big cities, can relate to.

“...this is one of those first episodes that makes me wish they released two at a time… the focus of this show adds even more depth...”

See also: Ahmed, as a human character, was redeemed in the Mandalorian Season 3 this year as a Jedi and it was great.

Podcast: Podcast But Outside
Episode: Guest-Recess Therapy’s Julian Shapiro-Barnum
Genre: Comedy
Publisher: Podcast But Outside
About: A podcast, but outside. Featuring fascinating interviews with random strangers who happen to walk by.
File this under things I didn’t know I needed. Podcast But Outside x Recess Therapy (Viral Corn Kid video). Filmed just outside a playground and permission, I was immediately filled with joy. The kids join in around 23 minutes and it’s lovable. Especially when a little girl defends her English teacher against the boys and admits to wanting to throw tantrums. “I love annoying my parents…” This felt great.
Kids say the darnedest things!

Podcast: More Than A Feeling
Genre: Relationships, Society
Publisher: Ten Percent Happier
About: Most of us have gotten at least a little emotional at some point recently. It’s natural. But why do we have emotions and how much should we pay attention to them on any given day? Can we learn to skillfully choose which emotions to listen to and which ones to just let move on by? In More Than A Feeling, the latest podcast from Ten Percent Happier, host Saleem Reshamwala goes on a real life quest to find the answers to these questions. He’ll experiment with neuroscientists, dive into stories with historians and philosophers, and document how musicians, therapists, hairdressers and airplane pilots work with emotions.
“Little emotional at some point.” A little emotional with Jar Jar right?
In the first episode, the sound/music design I immediately noticed. They really used it to strike emotional chords. Saleem was telling the story about his time growing up in New York and riding the subway underground. I want you to pay attention to the music in the background when you listen. It feels a little dark and unsure, but when Saleem gets to the point where the train goes overground and through the light at the end of the tunnel, the music changes into something happier and freeing. I noted at that point my mood changed. That’s flipping great.
“Cultivating a fuller emotional life” in the Why The Tears was something that I kind of want. I don’t show it, but I’d like it. Be right back, I’m going to watch all of Ke Huy Quan’s award speeches.
Only two seasons have been released, so you have enough to binge over if you want to get in the feels.
