Hey Poddy People,
Hope you are having a great week in listening. If you found a podcast via a critic-writer that I don’t know about or it’s not listed on the site, hit reply and share the link! If you don’t know my subject line reference…here you go.
Updates:
The Martha Stewart Podcast was announced and the first guest is, drum roll, Snoop Dogg.
Back in March, I moderated an indie panel at the Podcast Evolutions conference here in LA. In August, I’ll be joining a panel at Podcast Movement in Dallas. The topic: “Where are the podcast critics?” The panel includes esteemed podcast connoisseur and critics, Rebecca Lavoie (Crime Writers On...True Crime Review), Arielle Nissenblatt (Feedback with EarBuds), and Lauren Passell (Feed The Queue). Something we are all looking to solve. Let me know if you’ll be there!
Podcast to TV Pipeline: Last Known Position starring Gina Rodriguez, a top podcast the last couple of months on GP, is headed to Amazon Prime. Gina will be starring in the TV adaptation as well. Read more here.
Live podcast shows on my radar: My Dad Wrote A Porno is on a US tour. Betches Media U Up? podcast is on a US tour.
Speaking of live shows: The Ron Burgundy show is releasing the new season of the show that was taped live at the Largo in LA over two weeks. I wish I had gone. I’m looking forward to listening. The Mayor of Flavortown is the first episode.
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: Legacy of Speed
Genre: Sports, History
Publisher: Pushkin
Do you recall seeing the famous Olympic American sprinters Tommie Smith and John Carlos with their fists in the air during the 1968 games? Did you know the history behind them? File this under the “I did not know” section.
Well, they went to San Jose State in the Bay Area. Having visited San Jose State in the past, it was cool to hear about that timeframe, the coach, and the recruitment process. Heck, one of our very own just graduated from SJ State.
Keelin • Mentally? A Magpie.
“Legacy of Speed is on track to teaching me this history in an engaging and thoughtful way.”
Same.
Podcast: Betrayal
Genre: Society, True Crime
Publisher: Glass Productions, iHeart
Last week, I was telling you that the hit podcast, Betrayal was being adapted to TV. I got to listen to three episodes on a road trip. We constantly paused the episode to discuss what was going on. One thing we were amazed at in episode three was where co-host Jenifer Maison and one of the teenagers (at the time of the underage incident) were able to talk through the manipulation and damage that Jenifer’s husband had inflicted. Just wow.
Miranda Sawyer • The Guardian
“This is journalistically and ethically odd, to say the least. It’s good to hear the women reaching sympathetic understanding between themselves.”
It is odd, but I think that is what makes it compelling and shocking.
Podcast: WorkLife with Adam Grant
Genre: Business
Publisher: TED
Fine. I’ll admit it. I am behind on this one. Adam Grant is great and I follow him specifically on LinkedIn for his repurposed tweets and discussions on improving work-life balance. Plenty of topics to fit your fancy with this one. The episode “How to Rethink a Bad Decision” is two lessons I enjoyed. The first part is figuring out when you should leave a job and how you should rethink your exit. The second part is rethinking a failed or failing project. While the first half was a past reminder for me, the second half was my future at Great Pods as we continue to test new growth paths.
Arielle Nissenblatt • EarBuds Podcast Collective
“eloquently laid out the answers to your questions.”
Agreed.
Just Added:
Persona: The French Deception - Pineapple Street, Wondery
Impact Winter - Audible
PSYCHOACTIVE - iHeartRadio, Protozoa
Natch Beaut - Acast, Jackie Johnson
This is Love - Vox
Newts! - PRX
Class Action - iHeartRadio
Queer Serial: American LGBTQ+ History - Devlyn Camp
Stay safe, be empathetic, save water, and be kind!
Listening with you,
Captain Ron
