On to my picks…
Talkin’ Toons with Rob Paulsen
It wasn’t the lead podcast in the preview of the email, but it’s the lead podcast in my heart. Animaniacs is back with a new season giving me all the feels after 22 years. Hulu will be launching the new season comprising of 13 episodes on November 20th. #NotAnAd
I went looking for some podcasts on the Animaniacs to prep for the season. Rob Paulsen, the voice actor for Yakko and Pinky (and FYI: also Raphael in the original Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles), has a podcast called Talkin’ Toons that hasn’t been updated since 2019. I sifted through a bunch of episodes where he talks to fellow voice actors, including Mark Hamill, who is famous for lending his voice to the Joker across generations of Batman cartoons.
For you, though, I am recommending one of the first episodes: the one with his co-star, Brain, voiced by Maurice LaMarche.
Quick Summary: They chat over their history, animations, stories of years past. A great way to prep for the new season! (Spotify only - other platform links aren’t working)
One more note: When I failed to find a working episode across podcast platforms, I tweeted at him… He responded!
Back to the real world…
Or not… My next recommendation is from the NY Times audio team.
Rabbit Hole
About: What is the internet doing to us? The Times tech columnist Kevin Roose discovers what happens when our lives move online.
I listened to the entire series and it’s pretty good. I get the feeling the host tries to not get in the way by letting the subjects speak, it’s a good and bad thing. In the case of the episode with PewDiePie (online YouTube gamer), it feels long and he rambles over the course of two episodes. However, in the case of QAnon, it’s relevant, timely, and interesting.
Jeff Beer of FastCompany.com writes, “Overall, the message of Rabbit Hole isn’t that the internet is irredeemably bad, or that you should be scared every time you log on. ‘It’s just that it’s malleable, and it’s a thing that can be different than it is,’ says Roose (Host). ‘It didn’t have to be this way, and it doesn’t have to be this way in the future. We have choices, and we can shape this thing. In fact, it’s imperative we do shape this thing, because it’s going to shape us if we don’t.’”
Battleground - Ballot Box from Georgia Public Broadcasting
Georgia is on our minds. The Georgia Senate race is headed for a run-off in January. This will determine if the Democrats will tie Republicans and gain a Senate majority via the VP-elect. You’ll hear a lot about the run-off in the coming days and weeks.
About: Georgia has been the epicenter for the national conversation about who gets to vote and how those votes are counted. In the last few years, many changes have been made through the courts and the court of public opinion. Now, the 2020 election will be the biggest test the state has seen. Georgia Public Broadcasting political reporter Stephen Fowler walks through the ins and outs of how voting works in Georgia, highlighting the good, the bad and the complicated.
I’ve listened to every episode and have come away with more empathy for Georgia’s citizens.
