Hey Poddy People!
I hope everyone is having a positive week. If not, you have a lot of podcasts to look forward to. Let’s go!!!
The Round-Up
Uncle Joey (Dave Coulier) launched the Full House rewatch podcast this past week with PodCo. However, Steph (Jodie Sweetin) and Kimmy (Andrea Barber) launched the trailer and first episode of their own Full House rewatch podcast, How Rude, Tanneritos (iHeart)! For me, I’m all about the 90s rewatch podcasts.
A new Exorcist movie trailer was released, The Exorcist: Believer. Or you could listen to The Exorcist Files podcast reviewed by Podcast Geek. Or maybe not.
Interested in the Podcast Industry?
Podcast Movement is happening in Denver in late August. I’ve been since 2021. Get more information here.
Right before Podcast Movement, if you’re in LA, our 4th SoCalPodcastMeetup.com is happening. The location and date are just about ready, but you can sign up for the newsletter here.
If you’re in NYC, Glassbox Media (My Worst Date, Dark Valley) is hosting a Happy Hour meetup on August 2nd. RSVP here.
Music legends
Paul McCartney is supplementing his recent book with a podcast, McCartney: A Life in Lyrics (iHeart, Pushkin)
In an Almost Famous type of story, Rolling Stone magazine journalist Robert Greenfield joined the Rolling Stones U.S. tour in 1972 recording interviews. Stones Touring Party Trailer (iHeart).
Remember the early years of the pandy and one of the TV shows that kept us all together, Joe Exotic. Wondery’s podcast, Over My Dead Body had a season on him which spurred another TV show, Peacock’s Joe vs. Carole. Well, they have a new season coming out, Gone Hunting.
Gone Hunting immerses listeners in a twisted story of love, betrayal, and alligators in north Florida
In an earlier draft, I had written Over My Dad Body and I snickered. I’m not a Dad, but I still like a Dad joke.
Hulu is really signing a lot of Podcast to TV True Crime docs. Next up is the popular Murdaugh Murders podcast. Read more here.
Speaking of Hulu, Only Murders in the Building is back with the season 3 trailer. More podcast fun!

On to my picks this week…
Podcast: LA Made: The Barbie Tapes
Genre: Society, History
Publisher: LAist Studios
About: Season 2, “LA Made: The Barbie Tapes,” tells the backstory of the world’s most popular doll, Barbie. Barbie is a cultural icon but what do you really know about her? Hear Barbie's origin story from the people who created her. Co-hosted by Antonia Cereijido and M.G. Lord, author of Forever Barbie: The Unauthorized Biography of a Real Doll, hear the wild stories from never-before-heard tapes of interviews with Barbie inventor Ruth Handler, her wardrobe designer and the sculptors and fabricators, and the innovative marketers who made her what she is today.
As I binged through this series, the first-hand audio interviews with Barbie’s creators, developers, and head of marketing are just like a time capsule of listening.
Devin • Podstack
“the rawness of that kind of audio…it has a cool way of transporting you back in time”
The edits between M.G.’s narration and the interviews are pretty snappy. I like it. Creator Ruth Handler gave consumers just enough to keep them happy. No baby, but a baby sister. No husband, but a boyfriend. What a legend.
M.G. Lord in LA Made
“Barbie can be anything, but obsolete.”
It doesn’t hurt that M.G. is a USC professor. My Alma Mater and proud member USC Incubator Startup program.
Podcast: Where are you going?
Genre: Conversational, Society
Publisher: Loftus Media
About: A unique storytelling podcast in which Catherine Carr interrupts people as they go about their everyday lives and asks simply: “Where are you going?” The conversations that follow are always unpredictable: sometimes funny, sometimes heart-breaking, silly, romantic or occasionally downright ‘stop-you-in-your-tracks’ surprising.
I’ve got to imagine Catherine gets like 100 No’s for every 1 that says yes to be interviewed on the podcast. Those that say yes, are gems. Catherine has a knack, for the short amount of time in getting strangers to open up.
Miranda Sawyer • The Guardian
"Carr is such a lovely presence that people quickly open up to her, and this is a delightfully cockle-warming show"
Cockle-Warming: To warm the cockles of one’s heart means to bestow a feeling of contentment, to kindle warm feelings in a person, especially of happiness and felicity.
Podcast: After the Whistle
Genre: Futbol, Sports, Soccer
Publisher: Apple
About: Join Brendan Hunt, who plays Coach Beard on ‘Ted Lasso,’ and Rebecca Lowe, presenter for NBC Sports, as they team up again to celebrate the 2023 Women’s World Cup. They’ll talk about all the superstars, the drama … and, of course, the Team USA women, who are hoping to secure their third World Cup win in a row.
The drama of Ted Lasso: Season 3 aside, Coach Beard (Brendan Hunt) and Rebecca Lowe bring their knowledge and upbeat voices to the new season of After the Whistle.
Coach Beard briefly mentions in the latest episode intro that cheese sweats like meat sweats. Are cheese sweats a thing?! It was particularly lovely to hear guest, The Athletic’s Meg Linehan mention that fans in New Zealand (co-host country) are just calling it the World Cup alongside the improved marketing. It’s still disheartening that a lot of countries and their football/soccer federations have not written any checks to women players. (Episode date: 7/26/23)
If it’s your first time listening, start with the first episode of the season so you can catch up on the team’s background, Brendan & Rebecca’s chemistry, and predictions.
Michael Walsh • Yonkers Public Library
“Their knowledge of the game is insightful to those who may be watching soccer for the first time. Lowe and Hunt provide humorous commentary to go along with their analyses of teams and matches. After the Whistle is an excellent companion to the World Cup.”
Episode Rec:
Podcast: Blindboy podcast Episode: Sinead O’Connor
Genre: Society
Publisher: Blindboyboatclub
About: Hosted by Blindboy, of the Rubberbandits. An eclectic podcast containing short fiction, interviews and comedy.
This is a super popular overseas podcast hailing from Ireland. Super popular worldwide with around 1 million monthly listens(Source: N.Y. Times).
Episode: Sinead O’Connor passed away at the age of 56 this Wednesday and in 2021 she joined the Blindboy podcast. I went back in the catalog, there is so much I didn’t know about her:
Some highlights:
Sinead was more punk protest music
She’s a Bob Dylan fan and the album Slow Train Coming was like a father to her
Day of John Lennon’s death, music became fake for at least a decade
Dislikes streaming music because a full album, an artist takes you on a journey
Lou Reed, Muhammad Ali, and Willie Nelson were positive influences
Old news, but new to me: Nothing Compares 2 U was a cover from Prince. But also, the drama that ensued afterword
Rachel Connolly • New York Times
“His register is earnest and intellectual, but also funny and down-to-earth.’
