Hey Poddy People,
Happy St. Patrick’s Day! Don’t forget to wear your green or else…
Twitter Spaces update: I had my 3rd weekly Monday Twitter spaces show/chat. If I could self-criticize myself for a moment, I was a little bland and that usually isn’t me. Learning from that, I’m going to pick it up a notch this coming Monday. Set your Twitter space reminder here.
Shout out to Ed from The 80s Movie Podcast for asking some questions and conversing. Hopefully, he found it worthwhile. Ed does have a top-level goal of hitting 100 downloads, so let’s help him out!
SEO update: If you’ve been reading the newsletter last couple of weeks, you know we are continuously trying to figure out Google SEO. We are working on some experiments as to what is considered good content on the search engine with a test group of 50-60 podcasts on GP. It’ll most likely take a few weeks for any conclusions, but here’s to some positive outcomes.
L.A. Marathon Update: Sunday is my big day for the Half Charity Marathon of the L.A. Marathon. I’ll be playing a mix of podcasts and music on the 2+ hours course. Reminder: I’m supporting the K9 Youth Alliance which takes shelter pups with youth from underserved communities and pairs them up to learn valuable skills. Donate here!
Ambie Awards: Following that, Tuesday is The Podcast Acadamy’s Ambie Awards live in L.A. You’ll be able to stream it live on Twitch. I should be there in attendance taking notes, possibly live-tweeting, and prepping for the newsletter/blog. You can bookmark it here.
Podcast Movement: And finally, Wednesday-Saturday is Podcast Movement’s Evolutions conference in L.A. If you are thinking about attending, do it! Use this link to register. I will be moderating a panel Thursday afternoon.
There's probably more I could add but today is stacked with links.
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: The Bill Simmons Podcast
Genre: Sports Talk
Publisher: The Ringer, Spotify Only
Continuing on the Podcast of Year list for the Ambies is The Bill Simmons Podcast.
Well-liked and hated, veteran sportswriter Bill Simmons gives his hot takes on the sports world. It’s pretty standard in the sports-talk department. I’m curious as to why it is nominated because the format and chatter are pretty much the same as when it started years ago. It’s not groundbreaking. All that to say, I still like it. Bill is great at what he does and strikes up a conversation in the sports world, controversial takes or not.
Stephanie Andrews • Quill Inc.
“Each episode is highly engaging, fast paced, and unfiltered. Bill and his cohorts do not hold back when they disagree…”
Honorable Mention: Earth Eclipsed
What I really wanted to do was select this podcast as the Ambie Awards pick of the week, but I could not find a Critic review for the life of me. That’s why it’s in this honorable mention section. It’s an official selection podcast for the Tribeca Film Festival and I’m 3-4 episodes deep in this SCI-FI drama. It’s getting good. Someone should critically review it.
Podcast: Normal Gossip
Genre: Society
Publisher: Normal Gossip
I’m not one to gossip, but…this is juicy. Host Kelsey McKinney, joined by a guest co-host, is retelling a juicy story that is submitted from listeners. I sometimes think I am actually the guest co-host because I have caught myself actually talking back when listening. “I knew that would happen!”
Nicholas Quah • Vulture
“Normal Gossip can evoke bigger ideas about gossip: its purpose in society, its nature and meaning, its appeal. There’s no need to always over-intellectualize things. Good gossip can be just a good time.”
Honorable Mention St. Paddy’s Day:
Podcast: The Always Sunny Podcast (Episode 23 - Everybody Browns Out)
Genre: Comedy
Publisher: Charlie Day, Glenn Howerton, Rob McElhenney
The guys do a special episode where they celebrate St. Patrick’s Day in the comfort of Rob’s basement joined by producer Meg and co-star Kaitlin Olson. You learn a lot about them, including Charlie’s musical talents while they progressively get lit throughout the podcast for obvious reasons.
While you can listen to the episode, they have started to video the conversations to YouTube. I would recommend this particular episode to watch. It’s great.
Gwilym Mumford • The Guardian
“…bizarre and hilarious podcast is often funniest when it doesn’t even talk about the sitcom at all.”
Honorable Mention:
Coming Soon Trailers:
Podcast: A Piece of My Heart
Genre: Health & Family Planning
Publisher: Teissia Treynet
Podcast: HBO Docs Club
Genre: Documentary
Publisher: HBO
Podcast: Very Scary People
Genre: True Crime
Publisher: HLN
