Hey Party People,
NOW it’s Mother’s Day weekend. Happy Mother’s Day to all the mother figures out there.
Industry News: Facebook supposedly released a Spotify player within the Facebook app as part of their big audio push. I tried to share it on FB, but don’t see it yet. Do you?

On to my picks this week…
Podcast: Motherhood Sessions
Genre: Parenting
Publisher: Gimlet
Mom’s do have an important and difficult task. This podcast features Dr. Alexandra Sacks, a renowned reproductive psychiatrist, talking with mothers in raw conversations.
Ok, so hear me out. The podcast subjects vary, but they can be a great source of perspective. Heck, even emotional. I started off with the episode Rethinking Your Roots - the story of an adopted Korean-American daughter finding her birth mother. It was so good that I wanted an episode follow-up. I can admit, I did get a little sniffly. Thankfully, there is a follow-up in a later episode with some closure.
Whether she’s talking with a mother who rethinks her entire childhood as an adopted daughter or with the mother who must figure out a way to co-parent with an alcoholic ex, Sacks listens and responds with compassion and insight.

Podcast: David Attenborough’s Life Stories
Genre: Storytelling Nature
Publisher: BBC
Deep cut. David Attenborough. A narrator extraordinaire. He turns 95 this Saturday, and with the release of his new Netflix doc, Life in Color, I went on a search to see if Sir David had a podcast of his own. After a couple of Google page results, I found a limited two-season run from 2009-2011 that BBC Radio 4 produced with Attenborough that was still available on-demand. Even harder was finding a review, but I did it!
This is a fascinating listen and Sir David’s enthusiasm and knowledge really comes through in what was an excellently produced radio series.

What’s the catch?
It’s only available on the BBC website, BBC Sounds app, and somehow (I’m not asking questions because they are still fighting) Google Podcasts. It’s signature Attenborough, so have at it!
Happy Birthday to Drew too!
Podcast: The Improvement Association
Genre: News Documentary
Publisher: Serial | The New York Times
Great Pods is the most active on Twitter. You might catch an additional recommendation if you pay attention. Like this one. From the team that brought you Nice White Parents, comes the Improvement Association. I added a few reviews of it, but it wasn’t until the Twitter user commented on the music production of the news docuseries did I start listening.
About: For at least a decade, allegations of cheating have swirled around elections in rural Bladen County, N.C. Some people in town point fingers at a Black advocacy group, the Bladen County Improvement Association, accusing it of bullying voters, tampering with ballots and stealing votes outright. These accusations have never been substantiated, but they persist.
There are quite a few characters to pay attention to. I am three of five episodes deep gearing up to finish. The one-on-one interviews with the locals have been interesting so far.
“…it’s deliciously wonky, it’s (unsurprisingly) well-written, it’s rich with a sense of place...”
