Podcast: The Coldest Case In Laramie
Genre: True Crime-ish?
Publisher: Serial, NY Times
About: Kim Barker, a Pulitzer Prize-winning investigative reporter for The New York Times, revisits an unsolved murder that took place while she was in high school in Laramie, Wyoming, nearly 40 years ago. She confronts the conflicting stories people have told themselves about the crime because of an unexpected development: the arrest of a former Laramie police officer accused in the murder.
I woke up this morning ready to finish the newsletter and then it occurred to me, The Coldest Case In Laramie is launching. If history has taught anything here is that, when Serial puts out a new podcast, it almost immediately gets press coverage. I wasn’t wrong. I jumped on the bandwagon.
All 8 episodes are released today. I am listening through episode three. I like the “Previously on…” recap. It just makes me feel at home watching my favorite show. Not that I’m comparing the last two Serial releases because I am, Trojan Horse Affair or We Were Three, but those two had an emotional pull and I’m still looking for one in this podcast.
Laura Miller • Slate
The fantastic The Coldest Case in Laramie seems to be about a straightforward police cover-up. Then come the twists…it does demonstrate how an insistent desire for answers can lead us so very far away from the truth.

Podcast: Arctic Monkeys: Believe the Hype
Genre: Music
Genre: BBC
About: Two Glastonbury headline sets and the fastest selling debut album in British history. Arctic Monkeys changed the music industry forever; this is the story of how they did it.
A great thing about BBC podcasts-radio show combos is that they are almost always under 20-minute episodes. I binged this recent music-history podcast about the Artic Monkeys in one day. If you enjoyed Alternative-Indie-Rock music of the 2000s era, you’d enjoy this podcast hosted by Kate Nash. I also heard my name in the first episode. Spoiler Alert: It wasn’t me, but the British version of me.

…the band’s brilliant music is woven throughout. It’s like a blast for the senses; a clarion call.
Podcast: Stealing Superman
Genre: True Crime, Investigation
Publisher: iHeart
About: It was the most unlikely art heist of all time. Join some improbable detectives and one determined comic book dealer as they investigate the mysterious theft of the most important comic in the world ... a comic stolen from Nicolas Cage.
A more light true crime investigation podcast. Host, Dana Schwartz (Noble Blood, Haileywood), tells a great story with somewhat of an update at the end. As Devin, mentions below, it’s just the right amount of crime.
Devin • Podstack
“It’s a bit more complicated than a typical robbery, but maybe not quite as complicated as a full on art heist…You get an interesting look into Nicolas Cage’s life, the world of rare comics, and just the right amount of crime for my taste.”
