Hamm it up with some podcasts outside +Just Added and Coming Soon
Hey Poddy People,
So post-conference I got a non-covid cold which is a bummer, so my catch-up has been slow. There’s a lot to write about in a blog post, so enjoy these IG Reels in the meantime. Thanks to filters for making me look alive.
Podcast Movement Update: More in that blog will cover the Ambies, Evolutions conference, a resource for reviews, and a potential LA meetup of indies, not-so-indies, studios, and more. If you’re in L.A. and interested, reply back to the email!
Analytics Update: While we always have a goal of 10-20% website growth, we are continuing with our Google index test. We most likely will not hit the target for March, but we will have positive growth. Nerd talk: We also ran into some limitations around Segment.io and therefore, the engineering team, Sebastian and Chris, separated Google Analytics from that platform. We’re going to see how this plays out.
Top 5: The current Top 5 are the usual suspects, except for Derren Brown’s Boot Camp for the second week. The last episode was published in Feb 2021. Curious as to why it’s trending. Do any of you have thoughts on it?
Awards Show Updates: The Webby Awards is now creating a spin-off awards show for podcasts called the Signal Awards launching in January of 2023. The deadline to submit your podcast for consideration is May 6, 2022. Yes, there are entry fees ranging from $75-$735 depending on what your podcast/brand is. More information here.
Podcasting Deals Updates: Best-selling author Charlaine Harris, who inspired the vampire series True Blood, is teaming up with Realm for a podcast series. Read more here.
TV Update: You know I loved Season 1. I hope you did too. Only Murders In The Building released the first teaser for Season 2. Our compadres over at PodNews say Only Murders is a “not-very-flattering portrayal of podcasters and podcast fans". I say quite the opposite especially if you get parodied. Now, who killed Bunny?!
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: Therapy Gecko
Genre: Comedy, Conversational
Publisher: Lyle Drescher
About: An unlicensed lizard psychologist travels the universe talking to strangers about absolutely nothing.
I didn’t think this podcast would get critically reviewed, but here we are, thanks to Critic Nic Quah. It’s been on my occasional rotation and always see the Instagram/TikTok clips which garner thousands of likes and views. A recent episode of his was actually on the feel-good side that Gecko(Lyle) reframed a particular caller that wanted to get high, but was not giving him a good experience. So Gecko talked to him about what made him happy and to pursue that route. It was a cool moment among the low-brow chuckles we get.
With all this Youtube Podcast talk and how content can fit with video, this is one of those podcasts I can enjoy both with. He’s not a professional gecko or therapist, but he is a really good listener.
Word on the street is that he is now repped. (That’s how we say it in the biz when you get an agent.)
Nicholas Quah • Vulture
“I can’t stop listening. It is, I suppose, a form of performance art, but really, what isn’t these days. That’s all I have to say about that.”
Side note: He will be doing a live podcast show in May, for two nights. Night 1 is sold out. I will be going on Night 2 if anyone in L.A. wants to join.
Side-side note: While checking out the Lodge Room’s website, Welcome to Night Vale is doing a live show as well. Tickets here.
Podcast: American Hostage
Genre: Drama
Publisher: Amazon, Criminal Content
Based on the true story of a real-life hostage situation back in the 70s, this is a Jon Hamm starring role for sure, but Joe Perrino really shines as hostage taker, Tony Kiritsis.
I binged on this one weekend while I got lost on a run. Got two additional episodes in. Worth it.
Patricia Nicol • The Times UK
“This is enjoyably slick, impressively mixed audio action...Hamm transcends hammier elements”
Podlight (like spotlight, but for Pods!):
Podcast: Podcast But Outside
Genre: Comedy
Publisher: Andrew Michaan, Cole Hersch
I recommended this podcast last year but I’m dropping it in again because I attended their live show this week. Special guest Reggie Watts joined them late in the show. The chaotic randomness made for a great show. Like Therapy Gecko, they have video versions that they share on social which add to their comedic value. Another +1 for a audio or video podcast.
Simple in its premise, hosts Andrew & Cole interview random guests walking by on the street and listen/watch what happens. Occasionally, a Jon Hamm, Adam Scott, or even Therapy Gecko stop by.
Woah, all three podcasts today are connected in some way.
