On to my picks this week…
Podcast: Intrigue: The Immortals
Genre: Society, Technology
Publisher: BBC
About: Over the last 100 years, we've seen global life expectancy double. Could it happen again? In The Immortals, technology reporter and psychologist Aleks Krotoski explores the frontiers of the extreme longevity pioneers. They've made their money in Silicon Valley. And with their technology solutions they've ushered in the world that we live in today. Some of them now want to solve the problem of aging - or even death itself - and they are making bigger strides than we may think. Can they? Should they?
This wasn’t on my original feature this week, but just like all the reviews I was adding, this piqued my interest via the reviews. I’ve heard of the news reports about reverse aging in Silicon Valley, but this has BBC reporting to peel back the layers.
Standout episode 2, Berkeley Scientist, Irina Conboy, says within 5 years, we are going to see not the fountain of youth, but the fountain of middle age. This is where a 75-year-old will feel like they are in the 40s.
Rachel Cunliffe • New Statesman
“Krotoski invites us to be sceptical. But she also presses us to engage with the practical, legal and ethical implications of lifespans increasing dramatically.”
Each of the 10 episodes is released weekly on all apps, but BBC Sounds App/Website has all episodes available without geo-restriction. They are also 15 minutes in length and excellent for bingeing.
Podcast: Strike Force Five
Genre: Comedy
Publisher: Spotify, Strike Force Five
About: Late night talk show hosts Stephen Colbert, Jimmy Fallon, Jimmy Kimmel, Seth Meyers and John Oliver are teaming up for a new podcast to support their striking writers and out of work staffs. Strike Force Five! welcomes you to a conversation between five rival colleagues for an inside look at late night television.
Wow. I had no idea this podcast would be polarizing politically for this casual podcast. Then again, I shouldn’t be surprised since the Late Night talk show hosts lean left. The right-wing political-leaning folks have come out with a passion against it. Are they right? Nope.
The first episode is a bit disjointed; I’ll give reviewers that. The second episode starts to provide a little more structure with amusing stories. Having listened to Jimmy Kimmel in the past with the morning radio show here in LA, he does have a good command of the mic with a soundboard of gags included. However, what is the deal with the static coming from his professional microphone? That bugs me.
Story Highlight from Episode 2: Early in Stephen Colbert’s career, he slapped Jim Belushi on stage during an improv sketch with Second City Chicago that's real!
If you read any of the media regarding this podcast, you’ll know that Ryan Reynold’s Mint Mobile and Aviation Gin are sponsoring the podcast and proceeds will cover the out-of-work staff for the hosts because of the strike.
I’ve read comments that listeners think it’s only available on Spotify. It is not. It’s available everywhere.
Adrian Horton • The Guardian
“overall loose and informal (“has it been an hour already?” Colbert asks at the end), heavily inflected by references to their past careers in comedy and quick to dispel any illusions of a rift between the hosts.”
Side note: New reports have Fallon and his show under fire from staffers with a toxic working environment. Read more here.
Podcast: The Big Flop
Genre: Society, Business
Publisher: Wondery
About: The most expensive musical in Broadway history goes belly up. A theme park turns deadly. And a country megastar goes emo... all with catastrophic results. Join us each week as we dissect the most deliciously disastrous flops in recent history. On Wondery’s new comedy & pop culture series The Big Flop, host and TikTok superstar Misha Brown unpacks all-time epic fails from Quibi to Crystal Pepsi with the help of hilarious, highly-opinionated guests every episode.
Connor Ratliff (Dead Eyes, In The Cards) and Matt Bellassai (Diss & Tell) guest star in the first episode about Quibi, hosted by Tik Tokker Misha Brown. An amusing retelling of the epic failure of a company/app. Old audio interviews are interspersed with commentary. For example, Tom Lennon (Reno 911) was in the middle of filming for the reboot of Reno 911, when the crew was spreading the news that Quibi had died. Woof.
I just can’t believe I couldn’t get a hold of some of that funding from Quibi.
