Startup Update: Week 2 of 6 for Foundersboost where we extended our pitch to one minute. I struggled for half a second. However, that's why we practice.
I just found out we’re listed on makeuseof.com Podcast recommended discovery sites here. The writer, Mihir, does mention that our newsletter hasn’t been producing anything since June. GASP!
Lord of the Rings: The Rings of Power now has an official recap/behind-the-scenes podcast from Wondery with Felicia Day as host. Trailer.
This hit podcast on Great Pods last year, Bad Women, returns for Season 2 around murders in the 1940s, The Blackout Ripper. Listen here.
Serial dropped a new podcast today, We Were Three. Fun fact: Indie artist, Soccer Mommy contributed to the music of the podcast. Read more here.
Sky Networks signs Tortoise Media (Sweet Bobby, Hoaxed) in a first-look deal for Podcast To TV. Read more here. I’m available to act as Bobby. Just saying.
Spotify laid off employees and canceled some Gimlet/Parcast podcasts. Podcast reporter, Skye Pillsbury does an oral history of the drama. Popcorn is ready. Read it here.
Speaking of Podcast to TV or the Hollywood-izing of podcasts, reporter Ashley Carmen noted on Spotify, “in addition to offering a wide catalog, it’s treating content more like TV programs that can be canceled seasonally or even recast.” This includes name-brand personalities to produce hits. This may be why the top 5 on our charts are Spotify Originals this week. Read her write up here.
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: Burn Wild
Genre: Society, True Crime, Environment
Publisher: BBC
About: Leah Sottile presents a story of two fugitive environmentalists, an eco-terrorist cell and a burning question: How far is too far to go to save the planet?
Eco-Terrorism as it’s put. An interesting story on the difference between the terrorism we know where people die and that of terrorism that can shut down industries. Is it really terrorism? I don’t know, but listening to the second episode where horse meat factories were ultimately shut down because of the awareness it brought, doesn’t feel all that bad. When government and law fail you, at what length do you go to turn the tide? Quite the battle my mind was going through while listening. This is high-quality BBC stuff.
Ximena Smith • Stuff NZ
“What makes the podcast remarkable is Sottile’s extensive access to Dibee...The sound of the show is lush and high-end thanks to its sound designer and composer Phil Channell”
Podcast: What The Hell, Navya?
Genre: Society, Young Adult, India
Publisher: Bumble India, IVM Podcasts
About: The show aims to create a safe space for women across all age groups with hosts representing three generations and bringing in different perspectives. The hosts share their thoughts on financial independence, careers, love, parenting, friendship, and more!
I met the creator of IVM Podcasts, Amit Doshi, 10 years back when I was doing India outreach at TuneIn. The India region has been skyrocketing with listeners and podcasts and IVM was an early adopter of the medium. They booked one of the biggest Bollywood actor’s families. The Bachchans.
Navya, the granddaughter leads the podcast as her own, while chatting with her grandmother Jaya, a Bollywood legend, and her mom Shweta in this cute Red Table Talk-like podcast. Listening to the latest episode, it’s not hard-hitting like Red Table Talk can be, but it’s still fun to hear. I suppose I never listened to Jaya outside of acting and she is a firecracker. Also, there seems to be a visible structure to the show as Navya points out the questions and topics vs. just randomly talking about anything.
Aditya Mani Jha • The Hindu
“the banter between the three is both affectionate and deeply committed to getting some solid jibes in every now and then. Part of the fun, always, is hearing three distinctive personalities jousting with each other: Jaya with her well-chosen words and her sardonic humour, Shweta’s no-nonsense pragmatism, and Navya’s fresh-eyed, optimistic perspective.”
Podcast: Rachel Maddow Presents: Ultra
Genre: History, Politics
Publisher: MSNBC, Rachel Maddow
About: …the all-but-forgotten true story of good, old-fashioned American extremism getting supercharged by proximity to power. When extremist elected officials get caught plotting against America with the violent ultra right, this is the story of the lengths they will go to… to cover their tracks.
Rising up on the GP charts this week, I listened to the two released episodes. The parallels Rachel makes in this podcast made me shout in the car. Old Ultra-conservative Christian radio shows influencing 30 million people, *cough cough* could be podcasts. The Christian Right taking up arms with military-grade weapons. No, this isn’t now, but it sounded like it. It was the early 1940s and their alignment with Nazi Germany. I was stunned at what history had been lost to time. It’s a slick and well-produced podcast worthy of your ears. I shouted on the drive at the parallels of today.
Joe Pompeo • Vanity Fair
“it begins with a rabbit-hole-style windup that sucks you in before you know what you’re getting sucked into. It’s a history lesson worth taking given the fragile state of American democracy in 2022...”
Just Added:
Napoleon
The Prince
Eliza: A Robot Story
