Hey Party People,
I’m excited that you early newsletter subscribers will be going on the incubator ride with us. I’ll be sharing what we learned and how we are building in public. We’ll be using the hashtag #BuildInPublic around most of the socials.
Incubator update: We had our first intro to the incubator meeting this past Tuesday over Zoom. A lot of cool startups in the cohort (group). It was mostly an introduction to everyone and what’s to come. Mentor talks and meetings. Here we go!
Podcast News: Apple finally released subscriptions to their podcast app. Finally.
Industry News: Call Her Daddy podcast is becoming a Spotify exclusive. More on that below. Spotify released their Clubhouse/Twitter Spaces competitor called Spotify Greenroom. I grabbed the handle @CaptainRon early!
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: How I Built This
Genre: Business
Publisher: NPR
This long-running podcast seems ever so relevant now that we are in the USC Incubator. We are going to be learning new skills and tools to grow this start-up on podcat discovery. How I Built This is a great example if you want to learn about the early creations from some big name companies with great follow up questions from Guy Raz.
In the latest episode, Guy interviews the co-founder of Expedia, Zillow, and Glassdoor. Inspiration can come from anywhere, and for a Zillow brainstorm session, one of team members asked the question, “What if we could create this stock chart but have it be your house value?”
I ask the question with Great Pods: “What if there was a site that collected all critics reviews for a podcast, good and bad?”
I also caught the episode with Diapers.com / Jet.com which had great stories on competition. Amazon acquired Diapers.com and Walmart acquired Jet.com.
Sarah Ellis - Greatist - Oct 2, 2018
“It leaves you with that same sense of accomplishment you feel when you’ve finished a great training run.”
Podcast: Today, Explained
Episode: Juneteenth
Genre: Daily News
Publisher: Vox
This weekend is Juneteenth. June 19th, aka Juneteenth, was the day the last slaves left, after the civil war ended, were told that they were free. It was just one of those events that was not taught in school where I grew up, so it was great to hear new history lessons. Just this week, the Senate & House finally approved in making Juneteenth a new federal holiday with Biden signing it today. Vox’s daily deep dive podcast gives a nice lesson on the celebration.
Alison Osborne - Quill It - Oct 19, 2020
“Honestly, I’m amazed that this series is produced 5 days of the week at this level of quality and with the names that they have on each episode.”
Podcast: Call Her Daddy
Genre: Relationships (Adult)
Publisher: Barstool (Soon to be Spotify)
Happy Father’s Day? Ok, not the greatest segue into this recommendation for Father’s Day. Call Her Daddy jumped on my radar when it was announced that Spotify will be acquiring it from Barstool Sports for $60 million! I can’t say I am a everyday listener, but I was more appreciative of reviews from the Queen’s Journal. Two writers of different backgrounds giving their review of the podcast on two different ends of the spectrum.
Aysha Tabassum - Queen's Journal - Nov 8, 2019
“Even if we’re only listening to it ironically, we’re increasing the likelihood that someone younger and less experienced than us is falling prey to the show’s damaging rhetoric.”
Kiana Buzza - Queen's Journal - Nov 8, 2019
“At the end of the day, they do help to empower their massive fan base, breaking social norms that help women and men alike to live more confidently.”
But for real this time…
Podcast: The Dad Podcast
Genre: Parenting
Publisher: The Dad Podcast
Did you know being tongue tied is an actual condition?! Not me. Comedian Justin Worsham has light hearted conversations with doctors and other guests. The latest episode included Dr. Jay (StandUpPediatrician.com). If you’re a dad, reply back and tell me if this podcast was up your alley. I listened, not being dad, and it was pretty pretty good.
Wayne Parker - Very Well Family - Apr 29, 2020
“…quite entertaining—you may often find yourself laughing out loud while listening—and very informative.”
Stay safe! Be well! Live Laugh Love!
XOXO
