Turkey Trot with your headphones!🦃
Butterball Turkey, Willie Nelson, and a first in the Treasury Dept...
Happy Thanksgiving everyone! We may or may not be gathering with our family or friends bubble, please remember those who do not have food on their tables. Give where you can. Do a little good.
Additionally, let me be clear, it is the law(not sure about this) that Thanksgiving needs to pass before Mariah Carey is released for Christmas. What’s the rush? There are so many Thanksgiving podcast episodes out there to enjoy before then.
Also, share the newsletter with friends and family.
On to my picks this Thanksgiving week…
America’s Test Kitchen Butterball (2015)
333: Thanksgiving Special - True Stories from The Butterball Turkey Talk-Line
This was one of my favorite episodes when I was at TuneIn working with our partner ATK(America’s Test Kitchen). In this episode, they chat with the Butterball folks on subjects around emergency cooking and some odd calls.
“Can I use the cleaning cycle in the oven to quick cook the Turkey?” 🤣🤣🤣🤣
About the episode:
“We’ll put roasting pans through their paces with gadget guru Lisa McManus, and we’ll taste store-bought shortcuts to find out which ones to avoid and which ones will get Thanksgiving dinner on the table quicker.”
The Butterball segment starts at the 23-minute mark.
ATK ended the podcast and tried removing episodes everywhere, but Google Podcasts still has the episode available. Score!
Stuff You Missed in History Class (2007)
How the First Thanksgiving Worked
This episode of SYMHC is a quick history lesson on the history of the first unofficial Thanksgiving when the settlers/pilgrims and the Wampanoag people got together. Spoiler alert, the Wampanoag people weren’t sent the invite. A nice 13 min lesson if you are short on time.
CBS This Morning (2019)
What's the real history behind Thanksgiving?
A more in-depth look at the history of Thanksgiving with historian Kenneth C. Davis, the best selling author of “Don't Know Much About History”. He educates us on the “sanitization” of the historical narrative. Fascinating to say the least.
Honorable Mention: Milk Street Radio (2020)
The Thanksgiving Show
Diversity episode alert. 😊
Episode info: We’re celebrating Thanksgiving with friends old and new. Andrea Nguyen shares her family traditions, inspired by the Vietnamese Moon Festival; pie experts Chris Taylor and Paul Arguin put a new spin on classic desserts; Grant Barrett and Martha Barnette give us a language lesson on Thanksgiving Day; Rachael Ray, Maneet Chauhan, Maangchi, David Lebovitz and more.
Marketplace (2020)
President-elect Biden’s cabinet is coming to fruition. We get to see his nomination for Head of the Treasury Department and can you believe it, Janet Yellen would be the first woman to hold that position?!
Marketplace podcast has the info.
One By Willie (2020)
If you’re out for a Turkey Trot this week, listener Drea recommends the “One by Willie” podcast I dropped in the new releases section last week. I tend to gravitate to music and comedy podcasts on my trots, so will give this episode a listen. (pictured below)
Episode: Margo Price
Enjoyed it. The right length and provided a nice glimpse into Margo's relationship with Willie as well as the songwriting process. Love hearing stories of the connections forged that you don't hear about everyday, but contribute so much to the work of other artists.
