Hey Poddy People,
I’m off to the east coast for a wedding this weekend, but still have recommendations for you! My trip includes going to New York-Philly to visit some podcast friends. Stay tuned!
Industry News: HBO Max | DC Comics, John Cena’s Peacemaker spinoff show will get a video & audio format aftershow. Rooster Teeth is producing the podcast. Whenever I hear Rooster Teeth, I always remember their first online show back in the day (2003), Red vs. Blue, based on the Halo video game. Oh, how they have grown. Read about Peacemaker here.
PSA: If you’re a podcaster and your podcast has been reviewed by a blog or publication and is not on the Great Pods website, please send us the link to the article or list at hello@greatpods.co and I can add it.
Great Pods Charts: Ghostwriter, the podcast movie starring Kate Mara and Adam Scott, was number one for the fifth straight week on unique page views. Quite the interest for this podcast.
Critic Updates: The writer’s group, Bello Collective, is shutting down for a while. As a resource for us, they will be missed. They understood the need for critical reviews in the podcast industry. I hope they come back soon! Read their farewell here.
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: Bob Saget’s Here For You
Genre: Conversational Comedy
Publisher: Bob Saget, All Things Comedy
Sigh. We lost another comedy legend & TV dad this week. Podcasts and radio shows have no shortage of Bob Saget content. Heck, my favorite KROQ morning show has a lot of segments with him on. But, did you know he had his own podcast? There are episodes of just him calling his fans during the pandemic and just listening. You could sense his inner Danny Tanner in those sessions. Ugh. It was something else.
Additionally, I listened to his chat with Uncle Joey, Dave Coulier. It was full of NSFW conversations, dirty jokes, and fart jokes with his longtime friend.

Podcast: Dark History
Genre: History-True Crime
Publisher: Audioboom
In continuation with iHeart’s Podcast Awards in Feb, I took a look at their Best History Podcast list and picked out Dark History.
This podcast is going up against some stiff competition with Hardcore, Lore, and Revolutions. Hosted by Youtube makeup star Bailey Sarian, Dark History tries to tell the stories of events that sort of got brushed under the rug. It’s pretty standard of a history podcast. Since I was flying into Philadelphia, Bailey had an episode on the Philly police bombing of the MOVE activists in the 80s. Like so many podcasts I’ve listened to, she dropped information that the Reagan (this guy again) administration created the Military Cooperation with Civilian Law Enforcement Agencies Act which allowed the Philadelphia police force to acquire military-grade bombs that were used.

Honorable Mentions:
Podcast: The Lazarus Heist
Genre: True Crime - Money Laundering
Publisher: BBC
Podcast: Sweet Bobby
Genre: True Crime - Catfishing
Publisher: Tortoise Media
Just finished these two podcasts. The Lazarus Heist announce a second season set for the second half of 2022 and it reminded me to finish the first season. My hot take: Overall, a great podcast with some movie-like excitement but in the real world. The. middle episode could have been consolidated and tightened up. However, it kicked off with a Hollywood boom and ended nicely for the season.
The other podcast, Sweet Bobby, which I just recommended last week. It was hard to avoid the feeling of frustration for the victim for allowing 10 years of catfishing. But the host kept me in line and you hear the emotion in Kirat’s (the victim) voice as you walk through her shoes.
Side story: I did a lot of events in my 20’s and started to get random calls on my flip phone. An unknown girl who refused to reveal herself kept calling. I kept picking up her calls, for a year, imagining who she might be. So I get part of Kirat’s motivation to keep answering and feeling wanted. In the end, it was a waste of time and energy for me. Now a little older and wiser, I never pick up unknown numbers!
Charts from January 3rd-9th 2022:
1. Ghostwriter (5th week at #1) - C13Features
2. Bad Women - Pushkin
3. Harsh Reality - Wondery
4. The Lazarus Heist (New season announcement late 2022) - BBC
5 (tied). In Strange Woods (iHeart Pod nominee)
5 (tied). Last Known Position (New) - QCode
Just added this week:
