Hey Poddy People,
I’m back from Podcast Movement! A longer post is being written for the blog with a photo dump. Next week!
Nice to see new subscribers here! Glad to have you on board from non-industry to industry folks on our little startup journey to upgrade podcast discovery. Let’s go!
The TL;DR Podcast Movement!
Old subscribers know I hosted Maya’s (Proud Stutter) panel at PM - She wrote a post on how to improve your verbal diversity here.
Friday morning was the panel in Great Pods’ wheelhouse. “Where are the Critics?” It felt really short since there were 5 of us.
If I didn’t get a chance to meet you? Reply back!
Incubator: USC Incubator added some new logos to the school’s wall including yours truly! Although, I think the logo color scheme is slightly outdated now. ;)
Analytics: I really thought August traffic was going to be stagnant, but people really wanted to know about that Spotify podcast that we grew 30%+.
Coming Soon: Updated the Coming Soon section.
Non-Podcast Related: Climate Change. I am half Indian and half Pakistani. If you are living under a social media rock, Pakistan just had the worst monsoon 8x rainfall. At a minimum, read more about it here. At best, you can donate here.
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: Facing Evil
Genre: True Crime
Publisher: Tenderfoot TV, iHeart
Long story short. I met the hosts during Podcast Movement. Mostly, dancing with the crew at the iHeart party. So, like the other podcasters I met, I went looking for reviews so I could listen and potentially recommend it.
These two hosts, sisters Rasha Pecoraro and Yvette Gentile, are actually from the lineage that the Black Dahlia murders were about and previously had a podcast, The Root of Evil, which was complimentary to the TNT movie, I Am the Night. In their follow-up, the sisters take national stories like Matthew Shepard and Vanessa Guillen, while shedding more light on those victims. I listened to the Violence Against Indigenous Women | Tina Fontaine episode with the particular lesson of generational trauma.
Diana Safieh • Pod Bible
“Pecoraro and Gentile embody this message with sympathetic treatment of victims and stories and without being too preachy.”
Podcast: Archetypes
Genre: Society
Publisher: Spotify, Archewell Studios
Like I mentioned last week and above, Meghan Markle’s podcast gave GP a huge spike. Boy oh boy, the reviews are interesting, to say the least. It’s mostly the British press though. I invite you to read through them all. I did listen to Serena Williams and Mariah Carey (dropped today) episodes. It’s not entirely for me on a deep conversation level. I do hope for more depth to come through. Meghan does have a great voice for audio.
Point
Keelin • Mentally? A Magpie.
“Archetypes is easy to sink into. I honestly wanted to just go along on a journey. This podcast is designed to feel like a lazy river ride. It has a direction, it’s just not necessarily in a big rush to get you there.”
Counterpoint
Olivia Petter • Independent.ie
"Meghan Markle’s podcast is navel-gazing, bumper-sticker feminism – ...It’s “unfiltered”. It’s “groundbreaking”. It’s… the most self-congratulatory 57 minutes of audio you’ll hear all year. Don’t get me wrong, I am not in the camp of Meghan-haters. Quite the opposite. If anything, I expected more from Archetypes. "
Have you listened? Do you agree with the critics? Sound off in the comments.
Podcast: REAL ONES with Jon Bernthal
Genre: Conversational
Publisher: Jon Bernthal
In an effort to not repeat the title, this gem is a real one. TV’s Jon Bernthal (The Walking Dead, The Punisher) is one of those hosts that lets the guest really just speak and work through their struggles. Of the three so far, I picked the Hollywood ones, I listened to Sarah Wayne Callies (The Walking Dead, Aftershock podcast) and Shia LaBeouf (First We Feast). <Yes, I picked First We Feast.
Sarah’s conversation about Hollywood gender discrimination w/ standing up for her director. Shia’s conversation diving into his spiritual growth path, but acknowledging his mess-ups, especially with those he affected. Shia for a while, gun on a table, contemplating suicide was compelling to listen to. It feels gritty and authentic. I appreciate it.
On my queue: Jay Dobyns spent 2 years undercover with the Hells Angels.
Maggie Boccella • Collider
“the show pulls absolutely none of its punches, and delivers some of the most engaging, authentic conversations out there, with Bernthal leading the discussion and putting a foot in the door for real connection and change.”
