What another week in politics amiright? Woof. None of that this week from me. Keeping the intro super short today because the recommendation section is a tad bit long!
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: But Why?
Publisher: Vermont Public Radio
I was talking to my friend about the newsletter and asked if he was listening to podcasts. It turns out his daughter was listening to some. One in particular caught my attention. Lucy, 8 years old from Phoenix, said she likes to listen to But Why? from Vermont Public Radio.
About: But Why? is a show led by you, kids! You ask the questions and we find the answers. It’s a big interesting world out there. On But Why, we tackle topics large and small, about nature, words, even the end of the world.
Chidera Ukairo from OwlKids.com said, “I think it’s a fun and interactive way to learn new things and have your curiosity satisfied.”
Lucy recommends starting with the Words and Language episode and I recommend the two whale episodes (I love whales🐋 right now). Here’s a clip.
Fun fact from the episode on whales: Whales have existed for 50 million years and started on land for their first 10 million years!
Podcast: People’s Party with Talib Kweli (Explicit)
Publisher: UPROXX
File this under “Woah, you have a podcast? It’s good!” That’s how I felt going into 2021 with Talib Kweli’s year-old podcast. Usually, on Twitter, Talib is going after racist trolls and posting for justice. I did not know the hip hop legend had a podcast called People’s Party with Talib Kweli. This was an education of Hip Hop music and legends. Old squabbles, black justice, and entertainment all play a role in this podcast.
Miranda Sawyer from The Guardian says, “Their [Talib and co-host Jasmin Leigh] conversations are not afraid to go deep.
Oh boy! Everlast, from House of Pain (Jump Around), was an interesting one. In the clip below, they talk about how Jump Around was making the DJ rounds, and Kris Kross’ Jump was released on the radio first in response. Drama. Here’s a clip.
Podcast: Unlocking Us with Brené Brown
Publisher: Parcast
This recommendation discovery comes from several sources. I gave it a listen when I saw podcasting heavyweights, Dax Shepard (Armchair Expert) and Tim Ferris (The Tim Ferris Show) on an episode roundtable. I enjoyed the episode because there was talk about podcasting, interviews, cold showers for health (I tried and almost got sick), and more. It did get real when they talked about child abuse and how they overcame it.
Katie Runde from PodcastReview.org said, “She [Brené Brown] infuses her own research and summarizes others’ influential work in social science with her Texas warmth, owns her own imperfections and mistakes, and makes the perspective she’s earned by deep, thorough research feel personal and relatable. These are conversations in the key of COVID, but they also segue naturally into revelations on love affairs and transformations, patriarchy and parenting.”
The other episode I listened to was with Dr. Vivek Murthy, former U.S. Surgeon General. They chatted about human connection and loneliness especially in the time of COVID. Super interesting.
Stay safe and wear a mask!
XOXO
