Hey Poddy People!
How do you do fellow listeners? Hopefully, all is well in your neck of the woods. Let’s begin, shall we!
Amazon News: Amazon dropped in their live radio app in the Apple app store in beta mode. Product updates were hard to come by as Amazon is generally secretive like Apple. The major difference is that you can play music from the Amazon music library that they have negotiated. I tried it out yesterday and it’s a little buggy. I would love to play podcast snippets on the show from the Amazon Music library, but it’s still early in production. Read more here.
Podcast Episode News: The well-reviewed podcast, Dead Eyes, is having closure on today’s season finale episode with guest Tom Hanks. Read more about it on our blog post here.
Analytics Update: We hit the highest of highs in web visitors on Monday. It was a combination of Google SEO and social marketing that brought it over the previous high we had. I shed a tear of joy.
Audible podcasts: I’m not sure what’s happening with Audible, but it looks like they are releasing more of their new exclusive podcasts to other apps now. I guess they’ve done it sporadically, but this is the first time I am seeing it. Impact Winter & Bob Odenkirk’s Summer In Argyle were the two that had me on the lookout.
Wheeling and Dealing: Misha Euceph’s Dustlight Productions (The Michelle Obama Podcast, Tell Them, I Am, and Hello, Nature) signed with CAA for representation. Read about it here.
LA Marathon update: I’m running the charity half marathon in a little over a week. I am also supporting the K9 Youth Alliance here in LA. Shelter pups + underserved youth with afterschool programs! Donate if you can! https://give.classy.org/captainpuppers
Twitter Spaces: I started a weekly Monday chart show talking about the top 5 and things around our startup. Last week we had Michael from Audio Drama Reviews on. He will be taking submissions for your fiction podcasts to be reviewed this weekend and only this weekend. Request guidelines/submission here.
Our next Twitter Space will be Monday, set your reminder here.
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: Ukrainecast
Genre: News
Publisher: BBC
This is a great podcast. The subject of a live war is not. However, the BBC’s new in-depth coverage is far above the rest with their reporting. I cannot help but empathize, understand, and feel frustrated from the events happening in Ukraine the same way I feel about oppression & aggression around other parts of the world. It’s updated every evening with contributions from the excellent BBC Global News team.
James Marriot • The Times UK
“Ukrainecast you can feel the might of the BBC swinging into action: the researchers, the foreign correspondents all over the world, the audio archives, the interviews with civilians in the war zone. It’s all dropped in so casually that it makes you forget no other podcast in the world could do this. Not even The Daily.”
Podcast: Alligator Candy
Genre: Documentary, Relationships
Publisher: UCPAudio
We continue down the list of Podcast of the Year nominations for The Ambie Awards.
A little similar in the grief column with a previous recommendation, Sorry About The Kid. Alligator Candy’s David Kushner recounts his brother going missing and interviewing his family and friends about that era. Another heart-wrenching story that I have to take in small doses. It’s still good.
Chanel Dubofsky • Vulture
“examines what grief and guilt and close calls can look like years later and how human beings cope”
Podcast: Hello from the Magic Tavern
Genre: Comedy - Fantasy
Publisher: Earwolf, Arnie Niekamp
This recommendation comes from my buddy Alex from Of Substance when we were catching up this week.
Alex actually pointed out that Great Pods had a review on it much to my surprise! Look, I’ve added a lot of podcasts that I can’t remember all of them. I revisited the page then remembered why I added it. I’ll end that story right there. You can figure out which review was added first. 🤭
Hello, was created by Arnie Niekamp, improviser and a writer for JackBox games!
As with long-running podcasts, I listened to the first episode and the latest episode, and turns out to be the 7th year anniversary of the podcast! You will need to get used to the idea of these comedians improvising from the start. Once you can imagine that, it gets really funny. You end up chuckling at them breaking jokes that the person delivering them is proud of. The latest episode has Matt Gourley, producer of Conan Needs A Friend, as “Mellisa Deathridge" and has “one good hand.” Take what you will from that.
Andrew Liptak • The Verge
"...hilarious improvised fantasy epic in podcast form..."
