On to my picks this week…
Podcast: Dreamtown: The Story of Adelanto
Genre: History
Publisher: Crooked Media
About: What happens when a city on the verge of collapse tries to reinvent itself? How much will it cost? Who will pay the price? Reporter David Weinberg spent years following one city in California’s Mojave desert as it tried to transform itself from a city of prisons to a city of pot. And it worked…for a while. Until it, spectacularly, didn’t.
This podcast was on my radar for the last month-ish. However, it wasn’t until a friend, who posted on Instagram, purchased an empty desert commercial land in… Adelanto, did I push play. Now I had to know what was up with this town. With all episodes out, I binged through this season all the way through this morning.
Cannabis, local politics, small community, individual drama, arson, money problems, water quality, and a desert town. A good chunk of the story circles around city council member, Stevevonna Evans, and her struggle for change, family, and especially over an inflated police budget. Neighboring city, Barstow was paying $9 million dollars for 42 officers. Adelanto paying $7 million for 6 officers!
Amidst the disappointing politics, it did end on a positive note.
My friend hasn’t responded to what he will be building there. Hmm.
Nicholas Quah • Vulture
“Let’s call it civic noir. Dreamtown is a great addition to the mix, equal parts fascinating, sad, frustrating, and in the end, hopeful.”
Podcast: Judge Gina
Genre: Society
Publisher: iHeartPodcasts Australia
About: Australia’s favourite straight-talking housewife and barrister Gina Liano is now Judge Gina. Take a seat in her courtroom as she settles the cases brought forward by celebrities and regular Aussies. Judge Gina deals in facts, not fiction. You better be ready to hear her ruling.
Like Judge Judy or any of the daytime Judge shows? Like Judge John Hodgman's podcast? Like the Real Housewives international editions? Let’s go to Australia for an evergreen podcast that even those of us in North America will find amusing. How much should a carpooling co-worker pay in gas? Should they pay? If asked to pay, what should happen? Friendships are tested. Even Real Housewives of Melbourne alums also make appearances in the court. It’s an enjoyable no stakes podcast.
Remy Varga • The Australian
“...it’s dumb fun...with a dose of Australian humour...she’s good at deadpan humour. It’s immensely satisfying to hear Liano scold her guests like some kind of impatient primary school teacher…the drama delivers.”
Podcast: Money Rehab with Nicole Lapin
Genre: Money, Business
Publisher: Money News Network
About: Ever notice that we will talk about everything before we talk about money? Sex? No problem. Politics? Bring it on. Money? Totally taboo. But not for long! Nicole Lapin— the only financial expert you don’t need a dictionary to understand, New York Times best selling author of Rich Bitch, and host of Money Rehab— is here to rehab your wallet, so you can get your financial life together once and for all.
Super easy to listen to and bite-sized. It’s a no-brainer add to your morning routine of podcast listening. Most episodes are under 10-15 minutes over the week and have a lot of good financial reminders. This includes a nice reminder for me to renegotiate my credit card fees. The easy ones too, like going after credit card retention perks (they may give you a year free from credit card annual fee) or lower APR rates and how to go about that.
Kat Tretina • Acorns
“a good choice for people just easing into personal finance that are looking for bite-sized tips and actionable advice.”
