Hey Poddy People!
Or should I say, Hello Mate! Hope you had a pleasant Bank Holiday(England) and Memorial Day(The States). I just came back from London’s The Podcast Show. It was fruitful and met a whole slew of new creators/industry folks. UK is the #2 audience for Great Pods. More on the recap in the upcoming weeks. Let’s go!
UPDATES
Two weeks ago I spoke at the intimate Outlier Podcast Fest. I was a little too excited to get actionable information out to the attendees. I saw myself speaking too fast. I’m going to remember to take a breath next time.
Last week Soul Sultras, The Podcast Academy, and I held a meetup right before the conference in London. What a great way to get the conference jitters out of the way.
A personal highlight was meeting BBC radio/podcast current and former employees. I would put on the BBC Asian Network at the TuneIn office all the time in the 2010s. Was I a little bit of a fanboy? Duh. Don’t worry I played it cool.
And since this is about Critic reviews, shoutout to Kev from Tea in the Sahara podcast reviews. I finally met him after 2 years of remote chats. Congrats on the upcoming baby girl.
A lot of new podcasts are coming out this June. Catch the refreshed “Coming Soon” section of the homepage.
EGOT winner, Viola Davis, and her audio company sign a deal with Audible. Read more here.
SoCalPodcastMeetup.com is announcing our next meetup next week. Stay tuned.
Only two podcasts in this week’s picks, because I was binging on the first one all the way through.

On to my picks this week…
Podcast: Believe In Magic
Genre: True Crime, Scam
Publisher: BBC
About: Charity, celebrity, illness and control. The extraordinary story of a teenage girl and her charity Believe in Magic, which ends up challenging the very nature of sickness itself.
Fiona McCann • Irish Times
“The podcast investigates this sad and sordid tale with compassion and tenacity, peeling back layers of deception in search of an elusive truth.”
What is the deal with early 2010’s health scams? Seems like it’s full of stories to share here. With all episodes out now, I was able to binge the podcast on my way back from London as it was based in England too. What fascinates me about these types of investigations is the field reporting and interviews that the host goes through. Adds a little element of drama to the mix.
Anyway, by the end I learned something new about potential child abuse terminology and manipulation.
Side Note: Episode 6, One Direction, in the beginning, took me out of the podcast for 5 minutes of amusement. Why? I clipped it here.

How the music can free her whenever it starts” - The Lovin' Spoonful

Podcast: Flipping The Bird: Elon vs. Twitter
Genre: Business, Technology
Publisher: Wondery
About: From Wondery, the makers of WeCrashed and In God We Lust, comes the wild story of how the richest man alive took charge of the world’s “digital public square.”
Stephen O. • Podcast Delivery
“Whether it's the thrill of watching a broken billionaire unravel or the morbid curiosity in witnessing the meteoric rise and ongoing fall, Flipping the Bird: Elon vs. Twitter roosts on a nest of wildly fascinating events that simply demand your attention.”
Hosted by Business Wars journalist, David W. Brown, you get his classic storytelling, but with added flair from recorded interviews within. There are certain inner workings, like how a private buyer could amass the shares and take a company over that’s interesting. The drama itself, I’ve read plenty about. If you haven’t, this is your listen.
