Hey Poddy People!
Storytime: My sister was reading last week’s newsletter on her phone while we were eating breakfast and stopped at Wiser Than Me.
She showed me her phone and said, “Have you listened to this podcast yet? It’s pretty good…”
I looked at her and said, “You know whose newsletter you are reading right?“
Let’s GOOO!

Last night, I went to the rewatch podcast, Pod Meets World live, hosted by iHeart. My write up along with a lot of backlogged write-ups will come soon. For now, I’ll say, it was nostalgia that hit the right notes as a show and doing good for mental illness charities. Shoutout to Tamar from iHeart for coordinating.

Podcast: Overlooked
Genre: True Crime
Publisher: KCUR Studios
About: Former Kansas City, Kansas, detective Roger Golubski is accused of putting an innocent man in jail, exploiting vulnerable Black women, and terrorizing the community for decades. How did he get away with it for so long, and what does justice look like for his victims?
Eric Thomas • Kansas Reflector
“This particular series rises to the vanguard of an often cluttered pile of podcasts. By dedicating years of dogged recording along with veteran skilled journalists to the investigation of this one sordid story.”
You may have overlooked (pun intended) this true crime podcast. As Eric mentioned, dogged recording coupled with skilled journalists, is really good podcasting. I would categorize this as a hybrid societal-true crime podcast of racial and power corruption from an individual and organization like the police. I can’t get past how much power Detective Roger had on this Black community and Black women. Just listening to their voices pushing through the pain to get their truth out there. This is a deeply important listen.
Podcast: Summer In Argyle
Genre: Comedy Fiction
Publisher: Audible
About: One town. One murder. One million hot dogs. Welcome to Argyle. Grab a hot dog and allow town narrator Jeremy Zax (Bob Odenkirk) to regale you with this region’s rich history! Founded in 1843 by settlers with their sights set on California, these brave souls grew too tired and instead settled for Ohio. Argylites love to celebrate the spirit of “close enough,” like that of Richie McDonough (Brian Posehn) a young man who was a stupendous substitute bowler that never bowled and instead kept the bench warm. His untimely, mysterious death in the Summer of 2013 is Argyle’s darkest secret.
Alec Bojalad • Den of Geek
“Though Summer in Argyle was borne out of the Odenkirks’ rigorous work ethic, the podcast is an unabashed celebration of all things mediocre.”
Do you want a weird comedy? Here you go. However, Summer In Argyle does need to be paid attention to, otherwise, you might miss the subtle quick jokes laid in the script. One murder happens every year in Argyle and it hasn’t happened yet before the July one million hot dogs/hot dog eating contest. This spells inconvenient trouble for the Sheriff, who just wants the murder to be over with so he can enjoy the rest of the year. Stephanie Hsu (Everything Everywhere All At Once), Bob Odenkirk (Better Call Saul), David Cross (Arrested Development), and more are in this all-star cast.
Available on all platforms.
Podcast: Hollywood Gold
Genre: TV & Movies
Publisher: Hollywood Gold
About: Hollywood Gold is a new talk show podcast that will pull back the curtain on the making of some of the industry’s most iconic movies, through interviews with notable producers and filmmakers.
WoolyKnickers • Pod People
“Hollywood Gold is like a modern version of You Must Remember This with a lot more tea to spill...”
Hollywood producers keep a movie financed, scheduled, and negotiated. There are a lot more hats producers wear, so this is just the shortlist. Listening to the production of Crazy Rich Asians and Knives Out and their respective producers was impressive. For Crazy Rich Asians was the importance of an all-Asian cast and stories about the distribution rights between Warner Bros. vs. Netflix. And for Knives Out, studios clamored to finance a project that wasn’t even written yet, and the producer sold the international rights for a profit before the movie was even made.
I loved those two comparative episodes. One is culturally significant and a struggle to produce. The other is relatively easier to get financed with big names attached. The lesson from both, go with people that are passionate about your work.
The host, Daniela Taplin Lundberg, is also a creative producer.
