Hey Poddy People,
Sometimes I think I donāt have anything for the weekly newsletter and then, poof, thereās a lot. Iām going to start with the obvious U.S. Newsā¦
Updates:
The podcast industry is reacting to Roe v. Wade. A couple of prominent folks have set up campaigns and documentation. I will defer to the strong women who created and initiated these resources:
Arielle started a resource guide that was quickly made into a website from Marcus dePaula for listeners and podcasters. Here.
Alexandra from POD.DRALAND put together a list of podcasts and podcast episodes about abortion hosted by women. Here.
And BIPOC Podcast Creators have a campaign and resources. Here.
Lastly, Abortion Funds to donate to a network of sources. Here. (Thanks Heidi)
Podcast Mentions: Jon Stewart received the Mark Twain Prize and this short clip is what Stephen Colbert said. Watch here.
No Critic Reviews: Dispatches from Myrtle Beach, despite having no reviews in the top five pages on GP. Itās a ācuteā show of Youtuber Link Nealās dad's exploits in Florida.
No Critic Reviews #2: Pod Meets World rewatch pod from Topanga, Eric, and Sean launched and it speaks to my nostalgia. Itās another rewatch, but from Boy Meets World and Iāll take it.
Birthday Weekend: Apparently, my birthday is on UFO Day, when Roswell crash-landed(allegedly). Iāll just point you to Keshaās podcast. Itās out there.
I did start a Planned Parenthood fundraiser on Facebook if youād like to partake here. If youāve deleted FB, donate here.
I have my donation page for the K9 Youth Alliance as well. Supporting shelter pups and underserved youth afterschool programs.
Iāll be in Syracuse for a week or so. If anyone is in that part of town, letās get some oranges.
On to my picks this weekā¦
Podcast: Podcrushed
Genre: Comedy, Society
Publisher: Nava Kavelin, Penn Badgley, Sophie Ansari, Stitcher
Iām going to keep it light in beginning. Nava, Sophie, and Penn read stories submitted by adults about their awkward middle school stories. They proceed to chat with a guest about their adolescent years. I turned to the Leighton Meester episode where she talked about her crush and marriage with OC Star Brody and Rainn Wilsonās episode on his nerdy upbringing.
It probably needs a little growing up to do with its format, but overall, itās enjoyable and light.
Hollie Richardson ā¢ The Guardian
ā...unpicks the awkwardness of adolescence...surprisingly relatable conversationsā¦ā
Do you have an awkward story that you want to share? Substack has comments, throw it in there.
Podcast: Dead End: A New Jersey Political Murder Mystery
Genre: True Crime
Publisher: WNYC
Another True Crime coming out of New Jersey. The last one was Father Wants Us Dead. This time a more recent murder in the political sphere. Was it a murder-suicide or a political hit? The full season is out now.
Jay Lassiter ā¢ InsiderNJ.com
āNot only is it beautifully produced and suspensefully paced, itās also impeccably researched and well-written by Ms. Solomonā
I do like how host-journalist Nancy Solomon adds context and pieces of the investigation during an interview to fill us in.
Podcast: Snooze
Genre: Conversation, Society
Publisher: LAist
āThereās a place for you,ā says Atsuko Okatsuka in the latest episode of Snooze. Atsuko, when thinking about becoming a standup, pointed out that Margaret Cho and Ali Wong were already prominent Asian-American comedians. So why should she try? Getting inspiration from Chelsea Handler advising that āthere is a slot for everyoneā Atsuko continued with her craft.
In a way, itās like when podcasters or startups see a product that is already out there. It doesnāt mean you canāt. I felt that. Thereās room for all of us.
Nicholas Quah ā¢ Vulture
āIf youāre looking for something light, fun, and fizzy...Snooze is a breeze of a show thatāll serve you well...a colorful sensibility thatās devoted to keeping things upbeat and optimistic.ā
I also listened to the Big Boi episode, and heās a master at Air Frying. Heās one of us!
š” PodLight Spotlight Recommendation:
Podcast: The Goblet Wire
Genre: Fiction, Drama, Role Playing Game
Publisher: Ester Ellis
If you are looking for something out of left-field, this podcast is one of them. I donāt know how to place it, but I am intrigued. Itās weird and under 15 minutes. I get whatās going on, but then sometimes I donāt, yet I want to keep listening.
About: A role playing game hums within a global network of power lines, fiber optic cables and obsolete satellites. Players who gain access to this mysterious phenomenon create a projection and are guided by the Dictator to realms not yet known to the conscious mind.
Tal Minear ā¢ Podplane
āI love how the language of The Goblet Wire flows, the vivid visuals it builds in my brain, and the alluring sound design that lends a layer of texture on top.ā
If you get a chance, comment on what you thought.
