Hey Party People!
Remember Lauren from Podcast the Newsletter, who guested on our podcast/newsletter a few weeks back? She had me on her newsletter for some fun! Check it out! Welcome to the new subscribers from Podcast the Newsletter.
A quick primer: Great Pods is a podcast discovery and recommendations ecosystem that uses podcast critic’s reviews and ratings to help you find your first or next listen.
In this newsletter, we recommend podcasts with a review attached to them.
The catch-up: It turns out April Fools jokes are pretty click-baity. A whopping 31% of you clicked on my April Fools GIF. If you really are excited for Great Pods to get funding, share the newsletter and give me feedback on the website!
Podcast Memes: I created our first #PodcastMeme after watching Godzilla vs. Kong. The character played by Brian Tyree Henry (Atlanta) podcasts and had a great line that I couldn’t ignore.
On to my picks this week…
Podcast: The Doodler
Genre: True Crime
Publisher: San Francisco Chronicle & uglyduckling films
Last week we posted about Lost Hills true crime set in Malibu. Continuing the west coast recommendations is the new release, The Doodler, set in San Francisco.
About: In the mid-1970s, another monster terrorized San Francisco’s gay community. He was coined “The Doodler,” and he may have been responsible for as many victims as the Zodiac Killer, yet you’ve probably never heard of him.
“It’s true crime with a purpose, painting a picture of a glamorous scene that was terrorised by a string of murders.”
Hannah Verdier - The Guardian - Apr 2, 2021
Podcast: WeCrashed
Genre: Business
Publisher: Wondery
In the news: WeWork, the billion-dollar office-sharing company, crashed, restructured, and is now ramping up to go public via SPAC without their suave former CEO. Wondery revisits their story in this podcast from 2020.
“Also piling up is a huge amount of schadenfreude, the most satisfying emotional reward of such tales. It’s fun.”
Miranda Sawyer - The Guardian - Feb 9, 2020
Keep in mind this isn’t a detailed analysis of their finances.
Podcast: Bullseye with Jesse Thorn
Genre: Interview
Publisher: Maximum Fun & NPR
Riz Ahmed became the first Muslim to be nominated for an Oscar for Best Actor this year with his work on Sound of Metal. Bullseye hosted by Jesse Thorn replayed an interview from 2016 in which Riz thoughtfully spoke about growing up South Asian in the U.K., listening to hip hop, as well as his life as an actor. I’ve personally been interested in the upbringing of South Asians in the U.K. seeing how I grew up here in the States. His response shed light on the experience and tied in nicely as a “get to know me” piece.
“In essence, the podcast focuses on the art of interviewing, and the roster of celebrity guests doesn’t seem to end. So if you’re looking for an entertaining podcast with a smart and funny host, then this one might be on your “bullseye” radar for the future.”

Honorable Mention: Godzilla vs. Kong had a podcaster. But another moment happened where Kong was speaking sign language. In a couple of newsletters ago, I mentioned an episode on You’re Wrong About with Koko the Gorilla. Another attempt at a meme was created. Ok, I’ll stop.
Stay safe, get vaccinated, #StopAsianHate, and wear a mask!
XOXO
