On to my picks this week…
Podcast: We’re Here To Help
Genre: Comedy Advice
Publisher: Gareth Reynolds, Jake Johnson
About: Jake Johnson (New Girl, Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse) and Gareth Reynolds (The Dollop) don't feel qualified to give strangers good advice. Most of their friendship over the last 15 years has been based around dumb bits, but they do (for better or worse) want to try to help people out. Like your friendly local bartender or your tipsy uncle at a family gathering, Jake and Gareth are on the caller's side and trying to help. Each episode, the guys make several pitches to callers (whose questions range from trivial to serious) with their best attempts of advice. They can't promise their suggestions will be perfect, but it will be the best they've got. Jake and Gareth also occasionally bring on a friend, peer or even an expert to help along the way. Stay tuned for the first episode of We're Here to Help on August 22nd! Want to call in? Email your question to helpfulpod@gmail.com.
It’s cute. Super cute. It sits nicely with a less than 40-minute or less show. The premise isn’t new. I’ve heard plenty of the call-us-for-advice, but we aren’t licensed therapists type of thing.
In a couple of episodes, I’ve listened to, it’s been women hiding their names because of the potentially embarrassing stories they had. One of the real-named women retold a story about meeting a Fake Jake Johnson in the UK. It was so good, that Real Jake and Gareth actually had Fake Jake on a follow-up episode and it was delightful.
After all…

“...the absurd situations people face day to day…Just because the show is lighthearted doesn’t mean the hosts don’t get invested.”
Podcast: The Riddler - Secrets In The Dark
Genre: Fiction-Comic Book
Publisher: Spotify, DC
About: A masked vigilante is on the loose, murdering notorious super-villains all over Gotham City… and all clues point to the suspect being the Caped Crusader himself, Batman. Now, with a target on his head, the charming yet deadly Edward Nygma, better known as The Riddler, is forced to break out of Arkham Asylum and team up with the Caped Crusader. The unlikely duo must solve the mystery before they too, become victims.
I’m claiming the acronym for DC Comics podcasts as the DCPU. DC Podcast Universe. Now with, Batman Unburied, Harley Quinn and the Joker, Batman: The Audio Adventures, and now The Riddler.
All episodes are out and binge-able, however, it’s only on Spotify. Maybe in the future, they’ll put it on other platforms, but I haven’t seen Batman Unburied out there.
The story is intriguing enough that Batman and Riddler have to team up. I didn’t realize in this timeline, that The Riddler knows anything and everything about everyone! The action and suspense are great.
Something new: Race is brought up at least in 2 episodes on the podcast. I, honestly wasn’t thinking about race until it was explicitly brought up. The Riddler in this version is South Asian with a possibility of being Muslim. The impact it has is with this villain origin story and how he was bullied. That’s interesting.
My only drawback. There are way too many F-Bombs. I’m not opposed to coarse language if it’s dealt with the context of the scene. Holy smokes there is a lot that it sometimes takes me out. Parental Guidance is suggested.
Other than that! Go for it!
Michael Bergonzi • Audio Drama Reviews
“the journey is more cohesive than “Batman: Unburied.” “Riddler: Secrets in the Dark” fulfills the promise to fans of getting a new character added to the world of Batman and DC Comics as a whole.“
Podcast: Let’s Make A Horror
Genre: Horror, Comedy?
Publisher: CBC
About: Comedians Mark Chavez, Maddy Kelly, and Ryan Beil will make you laugh while they try to make you scream. Over 10 episodes, Mark, Maddy, and Ryan will learn what it takes to make truly frightening horror, interviewing Hollywood writers, directors, and enthusiasts; probing their deepest fears; and eventually taking a stab at writing and directing their own shocking short film.
This is actually a fun podcast and somewhat inspiring. So much so that I started to think about what I could make on my phone while listening to the podcast. The podcast is not scary actually, but. when being interviewed by Eduardo Sánchez (Blair Witch Project) some themes of horror are mentioned…obviously.
Part of the series “Let’s Make A…”, coming up in the season is Ronny Chieng (Daily Show, Crazy Rich Asians, M3ghan) and Matt Gourley (Mallwalkin’, Conan O’Brien Needs A Friend)
Fun fact: I helped shoot and cameoed in my friends’ short horror movie on our iPhones last week! I’ll post it when it’s ready. Our very own Let’s Make A Horror.
Stephen O. • Podcast Delivery
“Let’s Make A Horror is a comic yet sincere attempt to peel back the veil of the horror genre and everything that goes into a horror flick. It also sets itself apart from its previous entries by fully committing to its premise...”
