Hey Poddy People!
Welcome to the new subscribers! I had to take last week off because I got sick enough that I couldn’t stare at a screen. Did it suck? Yes. I’m not 100%, but I can at least write this newsletter and take a break. I’m still catching up…so let’s GO!
Vice laid off some audio team members, but popping up in The Guardian is that Vice may be headed to bankruptcy. Read more here. H/T Podnews

Speaking of meetups, SoCalPodcastMeetup.com is almost ready to announce the next spot for the mid-June hangout. Sign up for that newsletter here.
New blog post! 3 times a year I’ll be posting The Top Critics on GP. These are the Critics that have their “Read Full Reviews” link clicked on the most on Great Pods. The quick post can be read here!

On to my picks this week…
Podcast: Vishal
Genre: True Crime
Publisher: BBC
About: On the day Prince Charles marries Lady Diana Spencer a young boy in the crowd vanishes. 40 years later in 2020 a BBC reporter gets a mysterious call that blows the case wide open. 29th July 1981. Despite a huge police search young Vishal Mehrotra is never seen alive again.
Fiona Sturges • Financial Times
"makes for remarkable listening. Vishal is simultaneously a story of a family left in limbo, a murder mystery and a vivid portrait of a moment in time."
From the jump you just feel hopeless at hearing Vishal’s brother narrate, his father and sister recollect what happened that fateful day. Episode 4 which was just released and brings about a 2019 mysterious call to a BBC reporter that reopened the case. What happens now? Well, you’ll have to listen.
Podcast: Hoops Paradise: The Philippines’ Love of the Game
Genre: Sports, NBA
Publisher: iHeart, NBA
About: ESPN's Cassidy Hubbarth and Titan's Nikko Ramos explore how the Philippines came to be a nation of Hoop Heads, from the origins of the world's second professional basketball league, to the Filipino-Americans in the NBA today. Coach Erik Spoelstra of the Miami Heat, ESPN's Pablo Torre, legendary PBA coach Tim Cone, the first Filipino-American to play in the NBA, Raymond Townsend, and more, join Cassidy and Nikko to figure out how the Philippines developed such a unique love affair with basketball.
Devin • Podstack
“the deep, colonial roots, the development of the second oldest professional basketball league in the world, and the creativity of these fans.”
The podcast is light-hearted with a casual history retelling of Basketball in South-East Asia. Those interviewed in the above description are all excited with pride to chat about their home country and all things basketball. You can feel the passion. Initially, the laughter between the hosts, Nikko and Cassidy, seems forced, but after the first episode, they are pretty smooth.
I can’t dunk, not even close. Most Filipinos can’t either because of their height and listening to podcast play highlights of how creative they are with layups I had to look up some videos. Queue up “Bebot” by the Black Eyed Peas and some chicken adobo.
Podcast: Pod Save The UK
Genre: News, Politics
Publisher: Crooked Media
About: Pod Save the UK is your weekly fix of political news, big ideas and a shot of inspiration. Each week hosts, comedian Nish Kumar and journalist Coco Khan are joined by politicians, experts, and famous friends to unpick the latest news, look for solutions, and inspire action.
PR Staff • PodcastReview.org
“..exactly what the island nation needs amidst stagnant economic growth and a beleaguered NHS. Hosts Nish Kumar and Coco Khan manage to put a light-hearted spin on such events.”
The first episode stars the new hosts with the Pod Save America & Crooked Media founder hosts, Jon Favreau, Jon Lovett, and Tommy Vietor in the crossover introduction. The second episode is when Nish and Coco start cooking with the news and politics of the UK. Since I am going to London in two weeks, the timing couldn’t have been better. They have an immigration boat crisis and while in the US, we have an immigration land crisis. This week’s episode is on protests during King Charles’ coronation and previous climate protest rulings by the UK judges. A judge sent a protester to jail just for stating why he was protesting! WHAT?!
Stay safe, wash your hands, eat healthy, and help each other out!
Listening with you,
Captain Ron
